In Learning Online: What Research Tells Us About Whether, When and How, Barbara Means, et al, looked at 45 studies comparing college learners in online and face-to-face conditions and found that “In most meta-analyses of controlled studies comparing learning outcomes for online and face-to-face instruction, those who learn online fare as well as, and sometimes even better than, those experiencing the instruction in face-to-face format.”

About 5.4 million students, or 1 in 4, took at least one distance education course during the fall of 2012, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

That said, even the best online programs – like their traditional campus counterparts – have some poor professors. And it can be trickier to identify those instructors in an online course until it’s too late to switch.

The many students beginning a new online course should be aware of these six signs their professor won’t make the grade.

Not providing any video or audio resources in an online class is tough on your students-you need interactive items for students-it's best if you include a number of yourself discussing / demoing concepts too.
