The use of transmedia and platforms in teaching

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, April 20, 2015 12:32 PM

The media isn't the message (and Jeff Gomez never says that).  It is the grand disrupter, the gamechanger, the brain bender.  The innovations in media technologies have upended traditional storytelling across all industries and challenged storytellers to learn new tools.  Media technologies and network connectivity have also, as Gomez points out, rewired consumer's brain with a new set of assumptions and expectation about the function and role of media.  Where media becomes part of the message, is in how it frames content within that set of expectations and meanings.  Our expectations of content, impact and interactivity are vastly different across platforms, i.e. mobile versus the big screen or web versus TV or digital versus paper.  The new environment as Gomez notes, demands integration of expectations in the content design

  • show how stories can be told with audience participation

Intersection of Creativity, Technology & Learning: A Conversation - Worlds of Learning @LFlemingEDU | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Back in 2010, I was a library media specialist in an elementary school.  I began to notice that as the years passed, my students were becoming more and more disengaged with the printed book, were becoming expert multitaskers and thrived in a more participatory type of environment. I knew the debate was not about e-books vs. print, but rather the STORY and how it was EXPERIENCED by my students. As a result, I decided to try a little experiment, I picked one of the grades I taught (fifth grade) and made it my quest to seek out 'interactive' children's literature and compare those experiences to our experiences with the ones we had with print.  I documented some of my findings in this Edutopia piece and a few years later, Joyce Valenza wrote a wonderful post about it here.  It was at that time that I stumbled upon the concept of transmedia storytelling.  I immediately was captivated by how entertainment properties used these techniques to deepen engagement, brand loyalty and ultimately increase their revenues.  I wondered how we as educators could leverage those same techniques to reach and engage our learners in ways that were yet unknown to us.  I even went on to suggest that transmedia storytelling could serve as a new model of learning for this digital age.

Robert Pratten:  "Transmedia for Change (T4C) is an umbrella term that encompasses transmedia activism (change in society or community) and personal growth (change in lifestyle, personal development). Underlying T4C is the belief that stories matter, that those stories need to be told to the right people at the right time and most importantly that projects should offer a pathway to success."

Looking at how the audience and the audience’s engagement has evolved, how new technological possibilities, startups and solutions enable all kinds of new producers, and how the market has started leaning towards a new economy and a new way of approaching content creation, distribution and monetization… I think we’re getting there, quicker than I thought."

Great reading for the low end of Youth - those still considering a place to study. This is a success story with lots of advice that appears sound to me.

It also speaks to an emerging career choice - one that is actually a modification of an earlier career choice. This modification will, I think, pull in  more candidates because it is both much broader in scope and pulls at the strings of many young minds - opportunity for self expression in a job that both pays well if you are talented and has a future.

It also references something but doesn't include any link to the reference. A talented youth will find it but sometimes it takes a kick in the l*9% to get some moving. It is practical advice from another success on being prepared for the market and it can be found at http://idealog.co.nz/design/2014/07/classroom-client. The title is From Classroom to Client. It is also worth a read.
