Virtual first impressions: Zoom backgrounds affect judgements of trust and competence

Virtual first impressions: Zoom backgrounds affect judgements of trust and competence | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Trait inferences from first impressions are drawn rapidly and spontaneously. However, the Covid-19 pandemic forced interactions online introducing differential influential factors on first impressions. As such, there is an absence of research investigating video background on videoconferencing impression formation. This study explored the influence of video background, facial expression, and gender on first impressions of trustworthiness and competence. Video background affected trustworthy and competence perceptions with Plants and Book backgrounds scoring highly on both dimensions while the Home and Novelty backgrounds consistently received the lowest ratings. Happy faces were perceived as more trustworthy and more competent while female faces were also rated as more trustworthy and more competent, regardless of the background they were using. The explanations for these findings are discussed, along with future directions for research and the implications for videoconferencing use.

Mike Caulfield Smart Talk | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Mike Caulfield’s Twitter profile states he is “radically rethinking how information literacy is taught.” He has had a lot of experience doing just that since he first designed educational games, created educational wikis, and co-founded a 5,000-member online community, Blue Hampshire. He took his interests in civic media to positions as an instructional designer at Keene State College and as the director for the OpenCourseWare Consortium at MIT before becoming a national figure in promoting a practical and effective approach to digital literacy.

15 Favorite Interview Questions to Completely Disarm Job Candidates (in a Really Good Way)

15 Favorite Interview Questions to Completely Disarm Job Candidates (in a Really Good Way) | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Maybe your favorite interview question is one of the most common interview questions. Maybe it's one of the most common behavioral interview questions. Or maybe you have a less conventional interview question you like to ask, like those asked by these company founders and CEOs.

What is your favorite interview question? To find out, we asked the Inc. community on LinkedIn to provide their favorites, as well as their reasons why. Below are some of the responses; go here and here to see them all.

1. "What is the hardest thing you've ever done?"

The answer can be personal or professional. What the candidate accomplished isn't as important as how -- and why. What were the hurdles? What were the roadblocks? Did the candidate seek help? Does the candidate credit the people who helped?

The answer also can provide insight into how the candidate defines "hard," and how their perspective align with the challenges your business faces.

We asked readers for their favorite interview questions -- and we weren't disappointed.

FlashWebsiteHeader's curator insight, February 26, 2018 4:21 AM

A few people have however grumbled that blaze flash website header design does not work. They say that the glimmer film takes too long to load, thus the vast majority will end up anxious and leave. To be honest, this is consistent with some degree. However, in all actuality, there are approaches to maintain a strategic distance from this. For example, rather than influencing the entire motion picture to stack at one time, the creator could separate it into parts.

Four Tips For Communicating Well In Nerve-Wracking Situations

Four Tips For Communicating Well In Nerve-Wracking Situations | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
A group job interview. A high-stakes board meeting. A pitch to investors.

If you’ve been in any of these situations, you know how hard it can be to speak confidently, articulately, and convincingly. Even if you think you know your message really well, speaking becomes a lot more challenging when the stakes are high. But while you can’t exactly control the outcome, you can control how you communicate in the moment. Here's how to speak well in even the most intimidating environments.

Why You Should Stop Doing Traditional Interviews

When Atlanta, Georgia, based ShelfGenie began franchising in 2008, the custom slide-out shelving company expanded rapidly, landing in 2010 on the Inc. 500 list for being one of the fastest-growing privately held U.S. companies and the third fastest growing franchise. Today the company hits more than $20 million in sales with about 150 locations in the U.S. and Canada. But, as so often happens with companies that see meteoric growth, ShelfGenie plateaued. While the company was still growing at about 6 percent a year and a half ago, that number wasn't good enough for CEO Allan Young, who looked around at his company which was full of good people who were heroes a few years ago, but now struggling to execute. His goal: To clean house and fill his company with A-Players who wanted to be held accountable for superior results. Here are some of the unusual--even unorthodox--ways he did it with the help of Rick Crossland, a consultant who helps his clients use "Topgrading" techniques to hire talent.

Looking for A-Players when you recruit who want to be held accountable for results? You're not going to get them the usual ways.

It's Time To Start Conducting More Scientific Job Interviews

It's Time To Start Conducting More Scientific Job Interviews | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

However the hiring process may be changing, there's no sign job interviews are going away from it. It's still almost unthinkable to land a job offer without going through some form of interview, whether in person or remotely. But anybody who's been on a handful of them knows how much one job interview can differ from the next—despite the plethora of advice about the best questions for hiring managers to ask and which cues to look for.

As a result, some job interviews are much more effective than others at sorting out whether a given candidate is the right fit. After all, while humans in general are fairly good judges of one another's character, plenty aren't but still think that they are.

There are ways to control for this variability, but that means turning the interview process into more of a science than an art. Still, there may be some serious upsides to doing that. Here are a few of them, and what it might take to do it.

If hiring managers really want to be fairer and less biased, says one psychologist, they'll need to cut the chitchat.

Robin Good's curator insight, December 10, 2013 4:23 PM

Back in Feberuary of this year Debbie Millman has interviewed Maria Popova, the curator of Brain PickingsLiterary Jukebox and the inventor of Curator's Code.

Find out what Maria thinks curation is all about (How do we make sense of the world we through stuff and through objects - whether physical or metaphysical) and why she has become so interested in it.

Maria is a fantastic and highly prolific content curator producing three original posts and between 60 to 70 tweets a day.

Specific interview points I suggest you listen to:

-> 24':30" for combinatorial creativity and the first recorded examples of content curation as a form authroship

-> 27':16" Curation - Do you define yourself a curator?

-> 28':00" Curators don't design, they organize

-> 28':50" What is curation

-> 29':19" Curation and pattern recognition

-> 37':45" The importance of discovery - why attribution matters
