Neuroscientist and tech entrepreneur Jeff Hawkins claims he’s figured out how intelligence works—and he wants every AI lab in the world to know about it.

WHY IT MATTERS: the book A Thousand Brains: A New Theory of Intelligence is a must read for anyone interested in how the brain is architected. Hawkins is an engineer and I've read his first book "On Intelligence" and followed Numenta for years. His latest describes his theory on how the brain is architected to create intelligence. What is fascinating is how he manages to describe his research in laymen terms with great real world examples. I suppose neuroscientist will find issues with it but not me. I find his theories to provide a balance versus books like "Superintelligence" (which I love but is more futuristic and conceptual) or the book "How to create a mind".

In December 2012, Kurzweil was hired by Google in a full-time position to "work on new projects involving machine learning and language processing". He was personally hired by Google co-founder Larry Page. Larry Page and Kurzweil agreed on a one-sentence job description: "to bring natural language understanding to Google".

WHY IT MATTERS: a great talk from one of the great minds in AI and technology in general. Moreover he provides an optimistic viewpoint on AI and the changes that are coming in the next few years. And remember, when you reach 1% of the final goal, you are only 7 years from 100%, assuming doubling every year or so. This is what exponential growth means.

Jeff Hawkins is most well known for creating the palm pilot handheld device in the 1990s. He also is a very intelligent man and neuroscientist. He penned the Book On Intelligence (http://amzn.to/2c1GBdZ) which provides an explanation fo the architecture of the neurocortex and founded a company, numenta (www.numenta.com), to implement this architecture in software.
Jeff recently re-published a 1986 paper he wrote which attending Berkley University where he presents his theory. This blog post provides context and a link to the paper which should be read as it presents his theories very well.

The author argues that intelligence goes beyond mere processing power and that it will not be sufficient for computers to reach the singularity to have intelligence.
WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT I disagree with the author but the article is well written and well researched. However I do believe that once sufficient power is available, the machine will start to "think", be intelligent, be creative, be self-conscious, etc. After all, any sufficiently evolved technology is impossible to differentiate from magic, as the saying goes...
