Sometimes the centre of gravity in tech is very clear, but as we enter 2022 there are lots of areas where trillion dollar questions are wide open. These are the questions I wonder about today, from crypto to cars to fast fashion - there are others.

We have reached a moment in time where old technologies - eCommerce or videoconferencing for example - are finally breaking into established industries. And the impact, at scale, cannot be found in technology but rather in every single industry it disrupts.

I have been talking with hundreds of people across the industry and have discovered that the changes coming to Apple are deeper than just a VR/AR headset. Way deeper. The changes already being worked into products represent tens of billions of dollars of investment.

WHY IT MATTERS: a long read about tens of new developments in the works at Apple from a long time AR-VR industry watcher (he was very bullish about Google glasses back in the day). Nevertheless, the article is a good rundown of what the future of 3D in AR and VR may be. 

What I find great is that it goes beyond the classic AR-VR use cases and into a more fundamental trend of embedding digital into the real world in 3D. The examples of what is being developed in the labs is eye opening. But remember, this is R&D and will take years to become ubiquitous.

There’s an old saying that the first fifty years of the car industry were about creating car companies and working out what cars should look like, and the second fifty years were about what happened once everyone had a car - they were about McDonalds and Walmart, suburbs and the remaking of the world around the car, for good and of course bad. The innovation in cars became everything around the car. One could suggest the same today about smartphones - now the innovation comes from everything else that happens around them.

WHY IT MATTERS: this post is a bit theoretical for someone not bathing in digital transformation all day as I do (mostly). It explores what could come next but more importantly stresses an important fact: we now have a new platform - the mobile phone - in our pockets that has the potential to transform our world. We have started to see this with eCommerce - physical retail stores become irrelevant and we can price compare from anywhere - but we have yet to see the real impact of eCommerce+mobile+cloud+5G. THIS is what I think about most days...

Amazon has quietly launched a new augmented reality application that works with QR codes on the company’s shipping boxes to create “interactive, shareable” AR experiences. Called simply “Amazon Augmented Reality,” the retailer describes the app as a “fun way to reuse your Amazon boxes until you’re ready to drop them in the recycling bin.”

WHY IT MATTERS: 2 elements we can highlight from this announcement.

1- AR is often a marketing gimmick with no real purpose. Why would you download install and use this app? Same goes for most AR apps out there...

2- eCommerce has a major downside from a sustainability standpoint because of transport, returns, over packaging, plastics, etc. As volume grows this must be addressed. This AR app will not help in any way. Unfortunately...

The physical world will become machine-readable, clickable, & searchable. There will be new interfaces & new ways to navigate & create content. We will create new lexicons and even new architectures for our digital selves and the digital world around us. What could a day in the metaverse look like? What if interacting with our digital assistants and virtual life could be more streamlined, productive and even fun? For many tasks, smartphones are bulky. They don’t allow us to work with both hands. They’re awkward as mirrors to the augmented world. AR glasses offer a different solution, one where the digital and physical come together in a streamlined approach.

WHY IT MATTERS: biggest hyped product in Apple glass. No one knows when they come out but they may represent as big a leap as iPone was in 2007. This article provides some good insights in future possibilities of an augmented reality world - as different from today as nokia phone vs. iPhones. Great read to see the potential. But be careful, this remains very visionary and many solutions (hardware, software, ecosystem, etc.) need to be in place for this to become reality... Hype ahead!

Niantic is bringing "reality blending" to Pokémon Go, a new AR feature that will make use of its past experimental work with occlusion. Starting in June and on certain smartphones, virtual pokémon will be able to exist in the real world more realistically by hiding behind trees and other fixtures and having parts of their body obscured by other real-world objects.

WHY IT MATTERS:  the technology is impressive (just look at the video). The appeal to a large audience is proven, as it has been deployed to a large audience via android phone. I wonder if this is the only AR success out there and if there are popular AR business applications? I wrote about some that appear to be very niche (see AR category in the previous blog posts).

Is it the devices (Apple is rumoured to have glasses in development but target dates reach as far out as 2022)? If not what is it?

The video shows how AR can help companies comply with social distancing. I thought this video was interesting because it might be a way to apply it to a school setting where a verbal command or cue like in the video would instruct students when they were too close to one another.

The coronavirus pandemic means the AR glasses have become even more useful for those working on the 911, Cayenne, Taycan, and other Porsches.

WHY IT MATTERS: everyone has experienced remote work in recent weeks. Zoom, Teams or Meet are fine if you work in an office. But out there in the fields, you need more. Enters AR, with the promise of hands free access to knowledge and télécommunications. This articles explains how AR is used to repair high end cars. Other applications include field service, architecture, etc. But be careful: the devices are bulky, with limited battery life and clunky software. For example, the company behind the AR glasses mentioned in the article has shut down a few years ago and magic leap is in dire straights. AR will remain an R&D experiment until Microsoft (most advanced today), Facebook, or Apple delivers useful glasses to the masses.

A new wearable hardware-camera-software bundle will enable frontline screeners to check body temperatures without using their hands or thermometers.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS:  I saw and tried this technology at CES2020. Scenarios were industrial, like watching for heat loss in refrigerators. Boring. The device is bulky, slow, low res, etc. Not very convincing.

But with covid-19, the same tech has a new purpose: equipment for security personnel to identify people with fever. 

More interesting is that enhancing human vision with heat detection may become the killer app (pun intended) in this era of coronavirus scare. Imagine when Apple announces their iGlass with builtin heat sensor, "so that you can detect the infected colleagues in the boardroom". Crazy? Maybe, who knows...

First thing that strikes you is that solutions appear useful but one wonders how much work goes into making each one and also maintaining each solution. AR & VR in commercial environment remain niche solutions at this time.

Here an extract from the #7 highlights an application of blockchain which we've been tracking for a while as a disruptive digital technology that has received a lot of bad press with the bitcoin debacle but that has real future...

L'Oréal is bringing its artificial intelligence (AI) technology to Amazon, which for the first time will give its mobile shoppers a chance to virtually try on makeup before buying. ModiFace, the developer of technology for the beauty industry that L'Oréal acquired last year, is providing digital demonstrations of lipstick shades using augmented reality (AR), according to a company announcement.

WHY IT MATTERS: always in search of the killer app, looks like AR is actually something that you embed into something else (here to sample lipstick in Amazon retail, there to correct the eyes in Apple facetime) rather than something you do on its own (think pokemon GO). Hmmm...

Augmented reality (AR) – technology that overlays computer imagery over real-world imagery as seen by cameras in real time, is being eagerly adopted by business.
In retail, in particular, there are obvious opportunities for allowing customers to see how products will fit into their lives before they've taken them out of the store.

WHY IT MATTERS: using AR to visualize how you look in a hat is possible. The article provides links and other retail use cases where AR may prove useful. I tried it out and found it a bit on the gadget side but - no app to install and very simple use made it easy to try it out. Looks promising, especially combined with AI where it could "suggest" hats based on your outfit. This may prove a useful business case...
