How tech will revolutionize #retail via @McKinsey is a realistic viewpoint on the "late follower" mentality of most retailers with a constant focus of the bottom line #realityCheck | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The retailer of the future will harness the power of data, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality, says serial entrepreneur and technology expert John Straw.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: warning! this article is not about your typical "robots will rule retail" or "everything has to be AI driven unless you die". Well, in some parts it is.

The reality check that retailers - and their technology vendors - must make is: retail is difficult, focused on the bottom line, with no appetite for innovation with short term results. Retail innovators must find a way to experiment while staying focussed on the bottom line.

Best quote: "‘I think the majority of the problems come from the unwillingness, perhaps the fear, of investing in something that
doesn’t automatically bring a load of cash onto your balance sheet."

Grocery ecommerce will drive the future of #robotic #fulfillment because it has the order volume and low margins to mandate #automation in its business case - and @Ocado UK grocery retailer appears... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Paul Clarke, Ocado's chief technology officer, has said he envisions the company eventually moving to completely "dark" fulfillment centers—ones that would be fully automated and employ virtually no people.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the acquisition of robotics for Ocado fulfillment centers could be seen as one more tech announcement. But buried in this Fortune article is this quote from Ocado CTO that summarizes the ultimate goal of grocery eCommerce: dark warehouses with robots doing all the work.

This may sound very futuristic but in fact it is the consequence of the grocery eCommerce business model: the only way to make money is to have robots to the work that consumers do when pushing carts in the store.

Alibaba Unveils New #Manufacturing #Digital #Factory that enables small-batch orders through automation & robotics

Alibaba Unveils New #Manufacturing #Digital #Factory that enables small-batch orders through automation & robotics | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

At an early stage, apparel was identified as the starting point for Xunxi – a sector in which the lengthy production cycles and high inventory levels have long been a problem for small and large players alike. Powered by new technologies such as real-time resourcing, process and cost planning, automated in-house logistics and Xunxi’s manufacturing operating system, the factory is able to produce small-batch orders at reasonable costs and with shorter delivery times, consequently increasing manufacturing efficiency from 25% to an average of 55%.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is a huge step forward and a sign of the times: manufacturing automation. Fueled by digital, automation, and robots, this enables production of smaller batches economically. When this is rolled out at full scale - I assume it still requires development and lots of tweaking - we can expect retailers to shorten the time from idea to production. with eCommerce, it enables the make-to-order that was made popular by Dell computers in the late 1990s: onl;y build the computer when an order has been placed. Expand this idea to t-shirts and you can see why this new Alibaba production facility is so important...

Market Guide for Smart Robots in Retail via @Gartner @impinj | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Market Recommendations

  1. Reprioritize your capital expenditure to bring forward technology investment in smart robot technology for cost optimization during and post-COVID-19, as well as to augment or release human resources for revenue-generating activities.
  2. Prioritize productivity and labor needs for the business to shortlist the vendor offerings. This research provides a number of potentially suitable vendors.
  3. Create a multidisciplinary team to assess key processes, identifying the best use cases for smart robots, making sure to include store associates.
  4. Create a smart robot implementation value scorecard to assess and prioritize the suggested use cases.
Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS:  watch for robots to start making guest appearances in stores as covid post-pandemic distanciation come into effect - and as retailers have pressure to raise minimum wage. This report provides very good insights and examples of retailers that have already deployed robots.

Travel 2040 provides a futuristic (idealized?) vision of the future of #travel where #Climate Emergency Force a Revolution in the #travel Industry via @Euromonitor | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The future travel experience will be personalised, delivering seamless and safe services that are high value, low touch and consumer-centric, thanks to an accelerated digital transformation post-pandemic. These new advances in technology will usher in a new era of automation, requiring upskilling for employees to provide greater levels of high-quality service. Tracking climate impact across consumers, brands and destinations will be critical for building resilience, agility and speed to combat future risks and accelerate the green transition.
This white paper outlines a vision for how consumers will book and experience travel in 2040, exploring how technology and the need for sustainability could change the travel experience over the next 20 years. In particular, this analysis will focus on the future of travel — exploring what online travel agents, urban mobility, air travel and hotels will look like.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: short white paper on what travel *may* look like in 20 years. I think it is idealistic and far fetched but there are elements in there that feel very probable (ie. renting clothes instead of packing your own, robots that carry your luggage, AR-VR to help with travel planning). Not saying if this future is good or bad, but will certainly be very digital. Thoughts?

Boston Dynamics' Spot Robot Dog Now Available for $74,500 via @IEEESpectrum | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

So is $75k a lot of money for a robot like Spot, or not all that much? We don’t have many useful points of comparison, partially because it’s not clear to what extent other pre-commercial quadrupedal robots (like ANYmal or Aliengo) share capabilities and features with Spot. For more perspective on Spot’s price tag, we spoke to Michael Perry, vice president of business development at Boston Dynamics.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the price tag appears expensive but in 3 generations (5 years at 18 months per cycle) the price will be down to less than 10K$ (Moore's law). Companies should start to include robots in their strategic plans because they will be affordable in 5 years and everywhere in 10 years.

As Workers Spread Out to Halt the Virus, #Robots Fill the Gaps via @WIRED | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Social distancing requires rethinking the layout of workplaces. A new breed of robots can help keep factories and warehouses running.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS:  I've seen these robots at CES2020 (or was it NRF?) and they are quite impressive. The video in the article shows that having small robots work alongside humans is a reality today. You'll see in the video that they use a modified kinect camera to sense depth, devices that I've also seen at CES this year and years before. Applications are endless and relatively low cost.

SINGAPORE: Far from barking its orders, a robot dog at Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park politely asks joggers and cyclists to stay apart and keep to safe distancing measures.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: here we are, technologies that were in labs last year making its way into commercial applications. The robot dog from Boston Dynamics is the 1st viable robot as it can move around in "real world" - climbing stairs, walking on ground and uneven terrain, etc. Here just a prototype it uses AI to recognize people and calculate if they are keeping safe distances. Give it a few years and the tech may be autonomous (now it needs to be human controlled) and represent real solution for guarding... and surveillance. Look at the video in the article.

Are robots the solution to the new normal post #covid crisis? | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

By providing retailers with real-time, accurate, and consistent data on OOS, they’re able to manage inventory successfully— including reducing costs—while improving in-store efficiencies. Our robots scan every aisle daily, providing employees prioritized tasks that allow them to take immediate action to reorder or restock based on velocity, department, promotion and more.
Bossa Nova enables retailers with precise granular data like persistent OOS in specific departments, and items with consecutive OOS days, triggering automatic reordering where necessary

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: covid crisis may further put pressure on the workforce. If you had a choice between a store with humans or robots that perform most mundaine tasks - cleaning floors & disinfecting area, providing help, checkout & payment, replenishment of shelves, ... - would you prefer the one with fewer possible infection vectors?

The future of #digitalTransformation is going from "bits" to "atoms"- 36 Game Changing Startups and Emerging Tech

The future of #digitalTransformation is going from "bits" to "atoms"- 36 Game Changing Startups and Emerging Tech | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The past few decades have seen unprecedented levels of innovation, especially in what Peter Thiel calls the world of “bits,” or software, internet, and mobile technology.

According to Thiel, however, there’s a sense that the tech space “could be doing so much more,” especially in what he calls the world of “atoms” or efforts to create things like new forms of energy, medicine, and transport — spaces that tend to be costly and challenging to tackle, but also potentially transformative.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this diagram shows well that the next improvements will come from technologies that impact the real world. We thus will move from a digital transformation to a real world transformation. Am I already obsolete with digital transformation? *sad*

Loblaw streamlines #BOPIS with #microfulfillment pilot project of @takeOff #robotic #technology that impressed me at #Shoptalk2019 - question remains about the financial viability of this level of ... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

A leading Canadian grocer will pilot automated fulfillment of its buy-online-pickup-in-store (BOPIS) offering.

Loblaw Inc. is building an automated picking facility to support its PC Express BOPIS service. Leveraging a hyperlocal fulfillment solution from Takeoff Technologies that functions in compact vertical spaces, Loblaw will launch the 12,000-sq.-ft. facility inside one of its GTA Real Canadian superstores in 2020.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: order fulfillment and delivery is the last remaining hurdle to eCommerce. Loblaws in Canada will pilot a micro-fulfillment solution from TakeOff that impressed me last year at Shoptalk. In short, they create an automated back-store where eCommerce orders are prepared with a huge amount of automation. The question remains whether the economics is better for micro-fulfillment or if centralized warehouse fulfillment with hub-and-spoke delivery is better suited for high volume / low margin eCommerce that grocery is about. Thus this "test" by Loblaws. Note that Sobeys has decided in favor of more centralized ocado-driven automated warehouse and Metro remains with the more traditional decentralized (and manual) store-based pick-pack-deliver process. Given the low volume of orders for online grocery in Canada I remain partisan of a store-based manual approach but the economics I got from TakeOff was promising. Below additional links if you want to read more about takeoff and ocado.

Construction sites will never be the same with HoloBuilder and Boston Dynamics SpotWalk robots, as well as drones and autonomous carry-all solutions #construction | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

HoloBuilder, a construction technology that offers reality capture solutions for progress documentation and construction project management, has announced a unique partnership with Boston Dynamics that will bring HoloBuilder’s reality capture experience to a robotic platform. HoloBuilder’s new application, named SpotWalk, is a new product from HoloBuilder that integrates with Boston Dynamic’s “Spot” robot – a dog-sized quadrupedal robot designed to be able to nimbly navigate challenging environments, including stairs and uneven ground.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: robots are entering hostile environment of construction sites. Here the autonomous robot that has been featured in funny and creepy videos in the past has been deployed to document construction projects over time. Couple this with drones that can film exterior shots and robots that facilitate carrying tools and dirt, you can expect the digital transformation to enter the physical world in a big way in coming years.

Boston Dynamics’ robot dog Spot is going on sale for the first time - this is a major milestone, moving from R&D to potential real-world applications , but be warned about the current limitations... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is a big deal because the Boston Dynamics robots appear to be the advanced and versatile. The fact that they are made commercially available is significant after years of being research project. You have to be in the market for an early device with lots of limitations but, looking down the road a few years, one has to start planning for robots to start making their way into practical use cases in construction, etc. Plus the videos are just fun to watch!

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: always good to look beyond digital transformation into practical applications of the digital technologies. In particular, #2,6,7 in the list. Here an extract from the #7 highlights an application of blockchain which we've been tracking for a while as a disruptive digital technology that has received a lot of bad press with the bitcoin debacle but that has real future...

"Together, a pair of technologies could reduce both food poisoning and food waste. The first, an innovative application of blockchain technology (better known for managing virtual currency) is beginning to solve the traceability problem.
