When surveillance meets incompetence- how an unsecured database of camera feeds and facial recognition data has exposed millions of private data in China may be a sign of things to come in the futu... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Last week brought an extraordinary demonstration of the dangers of operating a surveillance state — especially a shabby one, as China’s apparently is. An unsecured database exposed millions of records of Chinese Muslims being tracked via facial recognition — an ugly trifecta of prejudice, bureaucracy and incompetence.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: China is using facial recognition to monitor its citizens, this is a well documented fact. Unfortunately, not all the steps required to protect this very private information are being taken, as evidenced by this article. This raises again the importance of security to be built into our every activities, especially those that involve government or security activities.

How We All Can Fight Misinformation- @HBR creates a series called "reality wars" on a much needed topic that is hard to fight for: truth on the Internet | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

False news spreads online faster, farther, and deeper than truth does — but it can be contained. Here’s how.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: trust on the Internet is difficult to get. Harvard Business Review raises concerns and provides possible solutions in this special series. Much needed, the solutions do not however appear very easy to implement. Tough times ahead for the truth...

You have data and here are your rights - Your data matters @ICO #UK #privacy | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

We live in a data-driven world. Almost every transaction and interaction you have with most organisations involves you sharing personal data, such as your name, address and birth date. You share data online too, every time you visit a website, search for or buy something, use social media or send an email.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: ICO is the data protection organization in the UK. It provides a guide to your rights regarding data and privacy. Very useful and well done.

#BigData downsides: Fitness tracking app Strava gives away location of secret US army bases #privacy #security | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Data about exercise routes shared online by soldiers can be used to pinpoint overseas facilities. Sensitive information about the location and staffing of military bases and spy outposts around the world has been revealed by a fitness tracking company.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: Big data and Internet of things - where every device in the world is connected - has huge potential. At the same time, this enhanced traceability has downsides for privacy and security, as evidenced by this article from The Guardian. Other similar examples in the past have highlighted the possible issues: robbers get caught by police when the photos they post of their robbery includes their GPS location, or face identification cameras in China let government track individuals as they walk the street. We will have to find a solution for this in the future.

Is the dawn of a #privacy #secure web near? Blockstack Unveils A Browser For The Decentralized Web

Is the dawn of a #privacy #secure web near? Blockstack Unveils A Browser For The Decentralized Web | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Instead of Google, Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn owning your data, imagine a world in which you control the data about yourself and reveal only what is minimally necessary when required. It would be the web equivalent of proving to a bouncer only that you're older than 21, instead of also handing over your birthdate, address and whether you've elected to be an organ donor.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

To be in full control of our private information may be the holly grail of the Internet today. This new technology appears to solve the problem and provide a solution for all of us. For the moment in trial for developers, I can't wait to try it out....

Google analytics for real world - Euclid taps smartphone Wi-Fi for in-store retail analytics via @ventureBeat

Google analytics for real world - Euclid taps smartphone Wi-Fi for in-store retail analytics via @ventureBeat | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
Euclid furthers its quest to become the Google Analytics for the real world.

Euclid collects aggregated data on shoppers, including their visit duration and engagement rate, and presents it in an online dashboard for retailers. The company’s technology can grab information about a shopper even if they never connect to an in-store Wi-Fi network. Just like online metrics, Euclid’s data could help store owners learn useful details about their customers. For example, it could let a retailer know if something about their store is causing a significant amount of customers to leave quickly.

Like most companies that collect consumer data, Euclid claims all of its data is grabbed anonymously, and consumers can opt out as well.

Farid Mheir's insight:

This is related to a recent post on trash can that track users using their mobile wifi, a solution that is also being deployed in stores to detect and track shoppers and their behaviour.

Great thing here (as in the post on security cameras doing face detection), the solution leverages existing WIFI access point equipment in the stores. It simply analyzes the data in a new way. Low cost, easy to deploy.
