In June of 2018, in the midst of all the other letters demanding that the company stop police use of Rekognition, Raji and Buolamwini expanded the Gender Shades audit to encompass its performance. The results, published half a year later in a peer-reviewed paper, once again found huge technical inaccuracies. Rekognition was classifying the gender of dark-skinned women 31.4 percentage points less accurately than that of light-skinned men.

Facial recognition is the new hot tech topic in China. Banks, airports, hotels and even public toilets are all trying to verify people’s identities by analyzing their faces. But the police and security state have been the most enthusiastic about embracing this new technology.

What was once possible only via offline cloud computing servers is now built into the cameras themselves. Thus one should expect future security cameras to include not only the video feed but also meta data about objects and people in the scene they are scanning.

WHY IT MATTERS: face recognition using AI has been around for a few years. It used to require large computers in the cloud. Not anymore. This changes everything. 1) privacy: it will become more and more difficult to protect your privacy in the future. I have written about this before, specifically when the Google glasses came out 3 years ago. It is a concept that is interpreted differently in countries and cultures - such as China vs USA. 2) China: is investing heavily to win the AI war with the US. So we should expect every product - from glasses to door bells to cell phones to cars - to have face recognition built into the device in the very near future. At the CES2018 show, I saw a number of companies that offer face recognition chips ready to be embedded at low price into any consumer device. So it *will* happen. More on China in a later post... 3) protection: people will naturally want to protect themselves. We should start to see face masks that are designed to fool face recognition hardware as has been shown to be possible recently. WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT Amazing short 12min video because of the level of understanding that the President of the USA has of the threats that come from AI and other digital means. He has been briefed of course but his discourse and examples shows that these are very important topics on top of mind for him and his administration. Moreover, it raises some concerns on our ability to fight against those threats and the impact they can have on countries and businesses alike. Must listen video IMHO.
