Even before congested ports and parts and labor shortages began to snarl supply chains in 2020, companies needed to update their supply-chain technology. They haven’t done themselves any favors by clinging to manual systems and antiquated software, including one widely used application that’s so old the provider will soon stop supporting it.

Enterprise architects still have an important role to play at large incumbents, but they need to evolve in three ways.

WHY IT MATTERS: McKinsey is right to highlight the importance of enterprise architecture in the digital world. Where they miss the boat in their analysis is that EA is not a ROLE but rather a PRACTICE that many people in the organization should master. EA provides the tools and methodologies to analyze complex options and determine the most appropriate one. EA looks at business plan, capabilities, data, systems, infrastructure, security and governance required to determine the people, process and technologies needed to deliver value. They say it best in the article when they suggest to 'Build an architecture mindset across the company" and demand that Enterprise Architects - if such role & title remains relevant - need to work on their soft skills and get their hands dirty.

McKinsey Global Survey on technology and the business suggests that even in the crisis’s earlier days,1 respondents were reporting progress on their integration of technology and business—and that these efforts were creating tangible business value across four measures, including new revenue streams and lower costs. The results also suggest that, on average, some transformation activities result in more impact than others (namely, those related to talent and capabilities). And according to the data, the companies with top-performing IT organizations have differentiated themselves from others in their efforts to create value, adopt new technologies, and bring technology and business closer together. More specifically, the results point to seven key lessons about technology transformations.

WHY IT MATTERS: there are now enough company experience to start drawing conclusions and best practice. What's interesting here is that IT transformation (not *All* digital transformations) have bigger success when they focus on bottom line improvements than top line ones. Yet, most projects focus on the top line. Hhhhmmmm, this should make some CIOs review their project portfolio, no?

WHY IT MATTERS: this chart from McKinsey highlights the high use of spreadsheet for planning and seems to directly link to the type of systems in use (SAP appears bad for people to get the data they need but more modern systems like E2Open do not seem to suffer the same faith). In my experience I use the inventory of excels that people use as a proxy to how good (or bad) the IT systems are.
