A detailed study of machine intelligence in industrial and manufacturing operations reveals the surprisingly different paths companies can take. But a group of leaders shares similar characteristics.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: AI delivers real value in the manufacturing and production side of business. The McKinsey report shows ML and AI impacts bottom line more than top line, and that the field remains immature with the need for center of excellence and help from academia. Overall a useful reference when planning for back office and supply chain improvements.

Sometimes the centre of gravity in tech is very clear, but as we enter 2022 there are lots of areas where trillion dollar questions are wide open. These are the questions I wonder about today, from crypto to cars to fast fashion - there are others.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: this list of technology questions for 2022 feels like an answer to the question "what is digital disruption?".
We have reached a moment in time where old technologies - eCommerce or videoconferencing for example - are finally breaking into established industries. And the impact, at scale, cannot be found in technology but rather in every single industry it disrupts.
Boards can add value to their business’s digital transformation in five specific areas.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: not sure many senior executives, with backgrounds in Finance or Law, have the knowledge or interest to raise those topics and show their limited understanding of the whole thing. Then again, maybe it's just me...
There’s an old saying that the first fifty years of the car industry were about creating car companies and working out what cars should look like, and the second fifty years were about what happened once everyone had a car - they were about McDonalds and Walmart, suburbs and the remaking of the world around the car, for good and of course bad. The innovation in cars became everything around the car. One could suggest the same today about smartphones - now the innovation comes from everything else that happens around them.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: this post is a bit theoretical for someone not bathing in digital transformation all day as I do (mostly). It explores what could come next but more importantly stresses an important fact: we now have a new platform - the mobile phone - in our pockets that has the potential to transform our world. We have started to see this with eCommerce - physical retail stores become irrelevant and we can price compare from anywhere - but we have yet to see the real impact of eCommerce+mobile+cloud+5G. THIS is what I think about most days...

The WSE (pronounced “wise”) is the largest commercial chip ever manufactured, built to solve the problem of deep learning compute. The WSE is 1.2 trillion transistors, packed onto a single 215mm x 215mm chip with 400,000 AI-optimized cores, connected by a 100Pbit/s interconnect. The cores are fed by 18 GB of super-fast, on-chip memory, with an unprecedented 9 PB/s of memory bandwidth.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: this article and accompanying PDF presentation dive into the technical details of how it is now possible to put 1 trillion transistor on a chip designed for the sole purpose of machine learning. This is a BIG DEAL.
Superlatives abound at Cerebras, the until-today stealthy next-generation silicon chip company looking to make training a deep learning model as quick as buying toothpaste from Amazon. Launching after almost three years of quiet development, Cerebras introduced its new chip today — and it is a doozy.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: this is a BIG deal in hardware design. Being able to fabricate such a large system enables capabilities to a scale previously unheard of. Read this article for a high level overview, watch the next blog post for an in depth description.
Machine learning continues to gain traction in digital businesses, and technical professionals must embrace it as a tool for creating operational efficiencies. This updated primer discusses the benefits and pitfalls of machine learning, architecture updates, and new roles and responsibilities.
The retail industry is rewriting the laws of physics. Change is coming at an ever faster rate each year and 2030 will be upon us before we know it. Explore the world in 2030 and the future of retail 2030.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: the report is not available for free but the 42 slide summary is a great overview of key trends that are presented with observations and outcome.

“We chose right from the very start to not hide the technology,” Hanrahan explained.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: when I ask about what the "store of the future" looks like I often get descriptions of a robot-filled location with huge displays and computer kiosks. In fact the trend is to HIDE the technology to make the store experience more and more about what you had when you visited the general store of the past. Walk in and speak to an employee that is very knowledgeable about you, your needs and the products they have to sell. The only difference is that this knowledge comes from AI, cameras, sensors, and all kind of technologies that support and enhance the retail employee to make you believe they know you and their products. THAT is the magic of the store of the future. Get used to it.
A superb case study for the way Industry 4.0 is impacting the retail sector. Great for use in the study of technological impacts as part of a PESTLE analysis looking at a business' macro operating environment.
This artefact explores Walmart's new technology and its aims to improve the customer shopping experience. Named the 'Intelligent Retail Lab, or 'IRL' for short, this utilises Artificial Intelligence (AI) to track inventory availability and compare to upcoming promotional demand. In brief, it ensures that customers can confirm that their desired item is in stock prior to visiting the store via the app. Walmart is exploiting AI for competitive advantage, aiming to improve customers' perception of reliability and overall experience. However, the article doesn’t actually mention the words ‘competitive advantage’, which will necessitate students adopting critical thinking skills to evaluate where the advantage occurs and justify why. Within the unit, this artefact will be utilised as a stimulus item for students to discuss competitive advantage through embedding it as a link to Flip Grid. Flip Grid is an amazing website and app that allows a teacher to create a closed community topic where students respond to set discussion questions through posting authentic videos explaining their answer. Students will first view the artefact, reading through Walmart’s new Artificial Intelligence technology and then read the related questions displayed on Flip Grid. Students will then respond to each question through Flip Grid’s unique video features to respond to the questions in the topic through recording videos of themselves answering these designated questions. The learning is transformed as students will utilise the higher order cognitive verbs of evaluation and justification when viewing this article to answer a number of questions on competitive advantage within this scenario. These questions and the article are embedded within Flip Grid, allowing the task to be redefined, engaging students.
In this report, TDWI uncovers deeper insights that give users new perspectives on business questions. AI will transform BI and the way people make decisions and act. Rather than start with a hypothesis, data analysts will begin with an AI-driven insight. Instead of querying data to prove or disprove their hypothesis, users will query data to expand or validate a machine-generated insight or recommendation—or they might act on the AI-based insight at face value. But to get to that point, AI-infused BI tools will need to gain people's trust by consistently delivering accurate, relevant, and transparent insights within the context of a business user’s existing workflow. In the future, AI-infused BI tools will go beyond just surfacing insights; they will recommend ways to address or fix issues, run simulations to optimize processes, create new performance targets based on forecasts, and take action automatically. And yes, machines will make some decisions for us—especially operational decisions in real-time environments. We see this today with fraud detection and online trading systems, but it will become more pervasive.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: an interesting report that puts artificial intelligence (AI) tools as tools to augment Business Intelligence (BI) and evolve the field beyond analytics into prediction. Also provide some good reference diagrams as this one.
The Montreal Declaration for responsible AI development has three main objectives:
1. Develop an ethical framework for the development and deployment of AI;
2. Guide the digital transition so everyone benefits from this technological revolution;
3. Open a national and international forum for discussion to collectively achieve equitable, inclusive, and ecologically sustainable AI development.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: everyone needs to be aware of the potential downsides of AI and actively participate to do good in the field. Plus it is a declaration that was drafted and released in Montreal, so #proudToPromote!
This report lays out a maturity model for AI adoption in the enterprise. It outlines five stages of AI maturity based on how organizations approach business strategy, data science, product and service design, organization and culture and ethics and governance.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: AI is transformative because it can solve problems in 5 areas that were previously difficult to apply computer engineering and technologies before the advent of AI.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: this is a major effort by AI leaders. Most interesting when you read it backwards, it sheds light on what is possible or will soon be possible by AI algorithms. Must read.
We’re announcing seven principles to guide our work in AI. We believe these principles are the right foundation for our company and the future development of AI. This approach is consistent with the values laid out in our original Founders’ Letter back in 2004. There we made clear our intention to take a long-term perspective, even if it means making short-term tradeoffs. We said it then, and we believe it now.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: it is great to see companies create AI using these principles. Most interesting also are the areas that Google plans to avoid. Let's hope all others - including nation states - also will adhere to those principles...
Economist Andrew McAfee suggests that, yes, probably, droids will take our jobs -- or at least the kinds of jobs we know now. In this far-seeing talk, he thinks through what future jobs might look like, and how to educate coming generations to hold them.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: it is amazing how much foresight there is in this 2013 presentation - it may explain Trump's election but what does it mean for the near future if we do not have a more social oriented society.
Professor Andrew Ng is the former chief scientist at Baidu, where he led the company's Artificial Intelligence Group. He is an adjunct professor at Stanford University. In 2011 he led the development of Stanford University’s main MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) platform and also taught an online Machine Learning class that was offered to over 100,000 students, leading to the founding of Coursera.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: this 30min video is the best, by far, explanation of Artificial Intelligence and its impact on business today and the near future.
Disruptive technologies are transforming all end-to-end steps in production and business models in most sectors of the economy. The products that consumers demand, factory processes and footprints, and the management of global supply chains are being re-shaped to an unprecedented degree and at unprecedented pace. Industry leaders who were consulted believe that new technological solutions heralded by the Fourth Industrial Revolution – such as advanced robotics, autonomous systems and additive manufacturing – will revolutionize traditional ways of creating value. As the costs of deploying technology continue to fall, international differentials in labour costs will no longer be a decisive factor in choosing the location of production.
The resulting greater spatial and temporal flexibility brought about by technology will bring locations of production and sale closer together, and drive major changes in the design of future value and supply chains. These trends will change the shape and form of globalization, and thereby impact the trajectory of goods. Regional and local flows will become more important, to the detriment of intercontinental trade.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: the world economic forum keeps putting out great reports on the impact of digital transformation. I love the illustrations, great summary of key trends and their adoption. Must read.
Stanford University has invited leading thinkers from several institutions to begin a 100-year effort to study and anticipate how the effects of artificial intelligence will ripple through every aspect of how people work, live and play.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: anyone committing to a 100-year study is worth my attention. And to have the best in the field do that I find is just the best way for future generations to understand the context in which we make decisions regarding how AI develops. Fascinating. Just look at the topics they cover:
Technical trends and surprises
Key opportunities for AI
Delays with translating AI advances into real-world value.
The AI Index is an open, not-for-profit project to track activity and progress in AI. It aspires to be a comprehensive resource of data and analysis for policymakers, researchers, executives, journalists and others to rapidly develop intuitions about the complex field of AI. AI is the new electricity, and is transforming multiple industries. The AI Index will help current generations track and navigate this societal transformations. It will also help future generations look back and understand the AI's rise.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: AI evolves rapidly and this report presents the state of the world (mostly the US at this time) as it relates to AI. Must read.
Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology point out that when automotive transport arrived, a whole group of workers—horses—were displaced, never to be employed again. They lost their jobs and vanished from the economy. I would add another historical precedent. Offshoring in the last few decades has eaten up physical jobs and whole industries, jobs that were not replaced. The current transfer of jobs from the physical to the virtual economy is a different sort of offshoring, not to a foreign country but to a virtual one. If we follow recent history we can’t assume these jobs will be replaced either.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: the article very well sums up the changes that will impact us all - and the conclusion is bleak. When production is plentiful, very few have jobs. Having access to what is produced becomes the issue - if you don't have a job, you don't have the means to buy what gets produced. We will enter an era of social tensions and can only hope it will not be resolved in a 3rd world war.
Blade Runner 2049 misses modern strides in artificial intelligence, which is now capable of performing creative work alongside humans. The newly-emerging field known as “generative design” seeks to incorporate the computer more actively into the design process. In these kinds of computer applications, the designer uploads a “seed geometry” — akin to a keyframe reference drawing an animator might use — and then sets a series of requirements ranging from the aesthetic to the functional. The software then searches through a series of procedurally-generated designs based on the seed geometry and surfaces those that meet the requirements. The designer can select one of these “solutions” for production or to function as the next seed geometry and the process begins again.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: the article explains how generative design work and will transform the creative process in the near future. It manages quite well to show how it is difficult to forecast the future and that movies - the example they use is blade runner - fails to see important new transformative technologies.
I wrote about generative design tools and solutions in the past here http://sco.lt/8ookan
The robots are coming. We (as in the people who attend TED talks and things) tend to think we will probably be fine. You know, knowledge folks and all. We might not be. What will be our coping mechanisms? What can we do to be OK?
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: a short 15min video to listen to this weekend and bring very good conversation topics for Sunday dinner with the kids...
The era of easily-faked photos is quickly emerging—much as it did when Photoshop became widely prevalent—so it’s a good time to remember we shouldn’t trust everything we see.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: looks like we are getting closer to a world where fake news includes photos and videos. Watch out!
