An essential reference for solutions that have become staples of #digitalTransformation : Directory of Products That Assess #Identification Documents & Verify #Identity via @mydiacc HT @fbedard | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The DIACC is pleased to publish the first iteration of the Directory of Products That Assess Identification Documents & Verify Identity. This Directory is designed to provide an overview of providers’ solutions which use government issued photo identification cards, combined with biometric facial scans, to establish Digital Identity.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I missed that one when it was published last year. The document lists and compares tens of solutions and provides great overview of their characteristics. A great starting point.

The Long #Hack: How China Exploited a U.S. Tech Supplier is a story about the impact of global supply chains. It makes the case for local manufacturing and strong encryption in a world where everyb... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Each of these distinct attacks had two things in common: China and Super Micro Computer Inc., a computer hardware maker in San Jose, California. They shared one other trait; U.S. spymasters discovered the manipulations but kept them largely secret as they tried to counter each one and learn more about China’s capabilities.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: fascinating stories of espionnage using modified hardware by China. Everyone knows China, Russia, USA, and others do it. Just painful to see it in writing. A consequence of global supply chains (read the book "the world is flat" to understand why this is so) and a strong business case to bring back some of the manufacturing in our country even if it makes some devices more expensive. Considering that we are carry with us smart phones and that they are all made in China, this is going to be tough. This article is also a great case for strong data encryption for all data at rest and in flight.

An Absurdly Basic Bug Let Anyone Grab All of Parler's Data via @WIRED HT @NunoBarbeita @umlaut21

An Absurdly Basic Bug Let Anyone Grab All of Parler's Data via @WIRED HT @NunoBarbeita @umlaut21 | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Parler lacked the most basic security measures that would have prevented the automated scraping of the site's data. It even ordered its posts by number in the site's URLs, so that anyone could have easily, programmatically downloaded the site's millions of posts. Parler's cardinal security sin is known as an insecure direct object reference,

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: security has become central in our age of digital transformation. Yet, it seems, most people are either unaware of basic security principles, or not willing to invest time or money to do it. And I am not even talking of doing it *well*. Just implementing proper security measure. In this case it affect Parler, which in itself I don't much care about (they deserve it for such a stupid mistake). But their lack of security impacts their users privacy as well. And that includes potentially millions of people (in the photo, 68000 video have been geolocated - too bad for keeping your anonymity ;-)

Contact Tracing Apps must be installed on all phones #doItNOW as 60% adoption is needed to stop #pandemic - even if bluetooth has limits and GPS alternatives have privacy issues via @IEEESpectrum | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Some researchers point to a University of Oxford study that modeled the coronavirus’s spread through a simulated city of 1 million people; it found that 60 percent adoption is needed to stop the pandemic and keep countries out of lockdown (although the study suggested that lower rates of adoption could still prove helpful).

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: install the contact tracing app on your phone, because without at least 60% adoption it won't be very useful. Know that bluetooth technology will respect your privacy but has limited effectiveness. Alternatives that use more precise GPS data unfortunately also have privacy issues. No perfect solution but everyone needs to install the app we have now.

Safeguarding deletion correctness in social network graphs highlights the embryonic work that is underway to help erase some of our #digitalExhaust to enable digital systems to "forget" via @facebo... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

DELF is a new framework to help developers implement data deletion in modern applications. Traditional methods for implementing deletion require application developers to write repetitive, error-prone code. DELF’s main novelty lies in enabling developers to implement deletion in every product they build with minimal effort, which takes the form of annotations rather than code. DELF introduces multiple correctness validation techniques to help achieve semantic correctness and avoid mistakes that could potentially lead to retaining data that should have been deleted or accidentally deleting the wrong data.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this technical paper explains how Facebook engineering team has developed a framework to help facilitate the deletion of data in their social graph. This can be used in other contexts.

To me it highlights the primitive state we are in when it comes to permanently deleting the data we produce in our daily activities - so called "data exhaust". But what the framework fails to enable is metadata - for example the inferences that were made from the post such as the political preferences - are not reverted when deletion occurs. Thus the original data still leaves traces - the original event is forgotten but its impact is not. Much more needs to be created to ensure true "deletion" in order to enable that digital systems "forget".

Imagine Yourself Being A Hacker #BeginnersGuide #weekendReading via @HackerNoon | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Make no mistake, the knowledge of hacking is different from a hacker. A hacker is a person, not the skill. And the use of any knowledge is a personal choice and that choice isn’t universal. The same way some politicians are corrupt, some hackers are corrupt. The same way some politicians are good, some hackers are good also. You may be a Satoshi Nakamoto or an Albert Gonzalez, it is your choice. There is nothing wrong with the hacker knowledge. It is all about you. What You’ll Learn

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: a nice reference on hackers and hacking along with a how-to guide if you want to get started! Digital transformation often requires a hacker's mindset to get around problems and think outside the box so this should be mandatory reading for anyone in the field! ;-)

As more workers return to the office, companies are considering ways to track their employees to help prevent the spread of coronavirus among their workforce.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: yes the new normal may include being tracked by governments and employers for contact tracing. At some point the data will need to be be stored somewhere and the question will become: where is it stored? is it secure? is privacy protected?

It seems to be what's wanted to be used to monitor who has COVID-19 and who doesn't.  This would be those who have tested positive, those who have not been tested, and those in recovery.  By contract monitoring, every move made can be calculated.  The results could mean that persons found infected could be made to relocate to a forced quarantine.  The information could present pattern motion as a whole.  Thus, helping calculate where higher infection rates populate and helping to further investigation as to the cause/causes and spread of COVID-19.

Another speculation, it could help provide a system that incorporates police to be able to enforce that known infected persons are regulated to ensure that home quarantine is followed.  It could also help monitor, recovered cases in the possibility of relapse.  Relapse in regards to future contact with active positive cases, and the physical preparedness to relapse or not relapse.

In June of 2018, in the midst of all the other letters demanding that the company stop police use of Rekognition, Raji and Buolamwini expanded the Gender Shades audit to encompass its performance. The results, published half a year later in a peer-reviewed paper, once again found huge technical inaccuracies. Rekognition was classifying the gender of dark-skinned women 31.4 percentage points less accurately than that of light-skinned men.

Contact tracing is moving ahead with solutions from Apple and Google. Great technology with some scary privacy concerns - COVID-19 exposure notification API | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

When two people are in close range, with proximity detected by Bluetooth, their phones will exchange anonymous identifiers. If an individual gets diagnosed with COVID-19, they can have their device transmit a list of everybody they’ve been in contact with to the cloud.
The second person’s phone will periodically download a list of everyone that has tested positive in their area. If a match occurs, they will be notified and prompted to contact health authorities.”

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: covid contact tracing appears an important component of public health safety. Apple and Google are embedding the solution into their OS quite fast. This is great news to prevent covid spread in the future. It raises a ton of questions about privacy and contact tracing outside of the health crisis.

New research from @Google shows how effective is basic account hygiene at preventing hijacking with lots of useful data and links to protect your security and privacy | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

We teamed up with researchers from New York University and the University of California, San Diego to find out just how effective basic account hygiene is at preventing hijacking. The year-long study, on wide-scale attacks and targeted attacks, was presented on Wednesday at a gathering of experts, policy makers, and users called The Web Conference.
Our research shows that simply adding a recovery phone number to your Google Account can block up to 100% of automated bots, 99% of bulk phishing attacks, and 66% of targeted attacks that occurred during our investigation.

WHY IT MATTERS: an article full of eye opening data on hacking and security (like only 750$ to hack someone's password) and links to protect your Google accounts (like adding recovery phone number).

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: with voice enable devices making their way into the professional settings like doctors offices or lawyers office, the impact of devices that record everything that is being said in very private settings should concern us all.

We ran a privacy experiment to see how many hidden trackers are running from the apps on our iPhone. The tally is astounding. Apple says, “What happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone.” Our privacy experiment showed 5,400 hidden app trackers guzzled our data — in a single week.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I wrote about this many years back and it is worth an update given this very interesting article from WP. The growth of mobile tracking, yes even on iPhone, should be cause for concern. They also link to a solution, disconnect.me which I also covered in the past when it was launched as the collusion chrome plugin (in 2013!!!!). Moreover the very good github list of trackers is quite mindblowing. Yes it has been 6 years and the state of privacy has worsened in serious ways. Follow the links in the article for details but here are the 2 I consider most useful:

When surveillance meets incompetence- how an unsecured database of camera feeds and facial recognition data has exposed millions of private data in China may be a sign of things to come in the futu... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Last week brought an extraordinary demonstration of the dangers of operating a surveillance state — especially a shabby one, as China’s apparently is. An unsecured database exposed millions of records of Chinese Muslims being tracked via facial recognition — an ugly trifecta of prejudice, bureaucracy and incompetence.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: China is using facial recognition to monitor its citizens, this is a well documented fact. Unfortunately, not all the steps required to protect this very private information are being taken, as evidenced by this article. This raises again the importance of security to be built into our every activities, especially those that involve government or security activities.

But if you need yet another example of why trusting your home appliances with your secrets is potentially a bad idea, [Limited Results] is here to make sure you spend the next few hours doubting your recent tech purchases.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the article explains how this team has successfully retrieved private information from discarded connected devices. Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this article explains how and why security companies must rely on humans to teach computers how to do object recognition on security camera feeds. This may lead to privacy concerns until such time that camera video feeds are encrypted and access to the data controlled. Today, neither is done.
