How tech will revolutionize #retail via @McKinsey is a realistic viewpoint on the "late follower" mentality of most retailers with a constant focus of the bottom line #realityCheck | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The retailer of the future will harness the power of data, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality, says serial entrepreneur and technology expert John Straw.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: warning! this article is not about your typical "robots will rule retail" or "everything has to be AI driven unless you die". Well, in some parts it is.

The reality check that retailers - and their technology vendors - must make is: retail is difficult, focused on the bottom line, with no appetite for innovation with short term results. Retail innovators must find a way to experiment while staying focussed on the bottom line.

Best quote: "‘I think the majority of the problems come from the unwillingness, perhaps the fear, of investing in something that
doesn’t automatically bring a load of cash onto your balance sheet."

Market Guide for Smart Robots in Retail via @Gartner @impinj | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Market Recommendations

  1. Reprioritize your capital expenditure to bring forward technology investment in smart robot technology for cost optimization during and post-COVID-19, as well as to augment or release human resources for revenue-generating activities.
  2. Prioritize productivity and labor needs for the business to shortlist the vendor offerings. This research provides a number of potentially suitable vendors.
  3. Create a multidisciplinary team to assess key processes, identifying the best use cases for smart robots, making sure to include store associates.
  4. Create a smart robot implementation value scorecard to assess and prioritize the suggested use cases.
Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS:  watch for robots to start making guest appearances in stores as covid post-pandemic distanciation come into effect - and as retailers have pressure to raise minimum wage. This report provides very good insights and examples of retailers that have already deployed robots.

Boston Dynamics' Spot Robot Dog Now Available for $74,500 via @IEEESpectrum

Boston Dynamics' Spot Robot Dog Now Available for $74,500 via @IEEESpectrum | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

So is $75k a lot of money for a robot like Spot, or not all that much? We don’t have many useful points of comparison, partially because it’s not clear to what extent other pre-commercial quadrupedal robots (like ANYmal or Aliengo) share capabilities and features with Spot. For more perspective on Spot’s price tag, we spoke to Michael Perry, vice president of business development at Boston Dynamics.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the price tag appears expensive but in 3 generations (5 years at 18 months per cycle) the price will be down to less than 10K$ (Moore's law). Companies should start to include robots in their strategic plans because they will be affordable in 5 years and everywhere in 10 years.

As Workers Spread Out to Halt the Virus, #Robots Fill the Gaps via @WIRED | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Social distancing requires rethinking the layout of workplaces. A new breed of robots can help keep factories and warehouses running.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS:  I've seen these robots at CES2020 (or was it NRF?) and they are quite impressive. The video in the article shows that having small robots work alongside humans is a reality today. You'll see in the video that they use a modified kinect camera to sense depth, devices that I've also seen at CES this year and years before. Applications are endless and relatively low cost.

3 technologies will help recover from #covid-19 crisis:  manufacturing automation, shipment tracking, delivery robots | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The coronavirus outbreak will continue to propel funding, acquisitions, partnerships, and experimentation by brands and retailers as they are forced to grapple with global supply challenges posed by our increasingly interdependent world.

Regardless of the coronavirus’s impact on the global economy, we will surely face a similar situation in the future; brands, retailers, and their supply chains will need to be prepared.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: once we get over the health crisis, we will need to address the economic crisis. Key supply chain technologies will offer retailers and manufacturers solutions to reduce cost and their dependency on global trade fluctuations.

Loblaw streamlines #BOPIS with #microfulfillment pilot project of @takeOff #robotic #technology that impressed me at #Shoptalk2019 - question remains about the financial viability of this level of ... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

A leading Canadian grocer will pilot automated fulfillment of its buy-online-pickup-in-store (BOPIS) offering.

Loblaw Inc. is building an automated picking facility to support its PC Express BOPIS service. Leveraging a hyperlocal fulfillment solution from Takeoff Technologies that functions in compact vertical spaces, Loblaw will launch the 12,000-sq.-ft. facility inside one of its GTA Real Canadian superstores in 2020.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: order fulfillment and delivery is the last remaining hurdle to eCommerce. Loblaws in Canada will pilot a micro-fulfillment solution from TakeOff that impressed me last year at Shoptalk. In short, they create an automated back-store where eCommerce orders are prepared with a huge amount of automation. The question remains whether the economics is better for micro-fulfillment or if centralized warehouse fulfillment with hub-and-spoke delivery is better suited for high volume / low margin eCommerce that grocery is about. Thus this "test" by Loblaws. Note that Sobeys has decided in favor of more centralized ocado-driven automated warehouse and Metro remains with the more traditional decentralized (and manual) store-based pick-pack-deliver process. Given the low volume of orders for online grocery in Canada I remain partisan of a store-based manual approach but the economics I got from TakeOff was promising. Below additional links if you want to read more about takeoff and ocado.

Out-of-stock detection solutions for #retail are now #technology-driven / #AI-enabled via with cameras, robots, even drones via @FocalSystems | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

See below a chart comparing different out-of-stock solutions, their value proposition, challenges, benefits and costs to see how Focal's Shelf-Mounted Cameras stack up against the competition.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: technology is tackling manpower shortage in retail. Here an example of how cameras, robots and drones are leveraged to perform out-of-stock detection on store shelves. When you realize that certain store may have 25000 or more products, the time required to identify out-of-stocks for replenishment and the lost sales makes those technologies useful and cost effective.

Boston Dynamics’ robot dog Spot is going on sale for the first time - this is a major milestone, moving from R&D to potential real-world applications , but be warned about the current limitations... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Boston Dynamics only has 20 of the robots available right now, but it’s hoping to manufacture about 1,000 for use out in the field. So it has to be very choosy about who gets one. It hasn’t disclosed how much they will cost.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is a big deal because the Boston Dynamics robots appear to be the advanced and versatile. The fact that they are made commercially available is significant after years of being research project. You have to be in the market for an early device with lots of limitations but, looking down the road a few years, one has to start planning for robots to start making their way into practical use cases in construction, etc. Plus the videos are just fun to watch!

Top 10 Emerging Technologies 2019 highlight practical applications of #digital #AR #VR #robots #blockchain via @weforum | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The technologies on the list, which is curated by members of the Forum’s Expert Network, are selected against a number of criteria. In addition to promising major benefits to societies and economies, they must also be disruptive, attractive to investors and researchers, and expected to have achieved considerable scale within five years.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: always good to look beyond digital transformation into practical applications of the digital technologies. In particular, #2,6,7 in the list. Here an extract from the #7 highlights an application of blockchain which we've been tracking for a while as a disruptive digital technology that has received a lot of bad press with the bitcoin debacle but that has real future...

"Together, a pair of technologies could reduce both food poisoning and food waste. The first, an innovative application of blockchain technology (better known for managing virtual currency) is beginning to solve the traceability problem. Enhanced food packaging, meanwhile, is providing new ways to determine whether foods have been stored at proper temperatures and whether they might have begun to spoil."

This AI Drone Can Be Controlled by Your Eyes - opens opportunities in many fields including disabilities #AI #drone #enhancedVision | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Piloting a drone or an unmanned vehicle by only using your gaze sounds like a scene out of a science fiction movie, but now it’s a reality. Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, New York University, and collaborators developed a deep learning system that uses NVIDIA GPUs to enable a user to control a drone by simply directing their eyes towards where they want to steer.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: being able to control devices without your hand - using eyes or voice - is still being explored. I find this a great example of merging new technologies - drone, eye gazing, AI - to expand digital transformation beyond the current scope envisioned today.

Coulmain Thierry's curator insight, October 1, 2018 4:34 AM

Aparicio says the research is exciting because the reliability of the arm offers a clear path toward commercialization.

Developments in machine dexterity may also be significant for the advancement of artificial intelligence. Manual dexterity played a critical role in the evolution of human intelligence, forming a virtuous feedback loop with sharper vision and increasing brain power. The ability to manipulate real objects more effectively seems certain to play a role in the evolution of artificial intelligence, too.
Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: AI is useful for more than making recommendations of Netflix movies to watch. Here it is applied to the issue of robot hand grasping and the video shows amazing result with robots able to close an amazon shipping box container. wow!

Walmart is using #shelf-scanning #robots to audit its stores via @gnat | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The robots themselves are produced by California-based Bossa Nova Robotics, and are about two-feet tall with an extendable tower containing lights and sensors for scanning shelves. They sit in recharging stations in the store until a human employee gives them a “mission” — e.g. checking a particular aisle to see what needs re-stocking. The robots are supposed to save workers’ time, but Walmart says it will also use the data they collect to improve efficiency nationwide.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: robots are moving out of the factory floor to invade all other spaces - from parking to retail stores. Here a great example of a robots to handle a routine and very important task for retailers: identifying what is on store shelves so as to minimize the out of stock items and mapping store layout for order pickers (every store is different so picking items is often a nightmare). Of course, this will impact jobs - even though Walmart says it won't.

Amazon challenge tests #robots stow & pick skills, soon to replace humans in #warehouse | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Picking stuff up and putting it away sounds like child's play, but to online retailer Amazon.com, it is a high-tech, high-stakes game. This year, contestants competed in timed stowing and picking operations -- simple enough for humans yet nearly impossible for robots to perform reliably. For stowing, each robot was rated on how efficiently it could pick up items and put them on a shelf. In the picking phase, the robots had to put specified items into the proper boxes. The top eight advanced to the final round.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: robots will soon replace humans in Amazon warehouses, as there are already 45000 kiva robots and growing. Moreover, the tasks that robots can perform is expanding and Amazon is pushing the limits of what's possible with this annual robotics challenge.
