The post-pandemic workplace continues to shift and requires collaboration between remote workers and office workers. Digital transformation has accelerated across every organization and CIOs must maneuver to keep pace. Customer expectations have shifted, and spending habits are moving away from in-person activities to online. IT must improve its maturity in key capabilities to maintain relevance in the organization.

McKinsey Global Survey on technology and the business suggests that even in the crisis’s earlier days,1 respondents were reporting progress on their integration of technology and business—and that these efforts were creating tangible business value across four measures, including new revenue streams and lower costs. The results also suggest that, on average, some transformation activities result in more impact than others (namely, those related to talent and capabilities). And according to the data, the companies with top-performing IT organizations have differentiated themselves from others in their efforts to create value, adopt new technologies, and bring technology and business closer together. More specifically, the results point to seven key lessons about technology transformations.

WHY IT MATTERS: there are now enough company experience to start drawing conclusions and best practice. What's interesting here is that IT transformation (not *All* digital transformations) have bigger success when they focus on bottom line improvements than top line ones. Yet, most projects focus on the top line. Hhhhmmmm, this should make some CIOs review their project portfolio, no?

WHY IT MATTERS: very interesting trend here where web-centric laptops are becoming more than just toys. Chromebooks are basically a browser OS with everything in the cloud. It brings the same flexibility that smartphones have - everything's in the cloud so if you destroy your phone you can pickup where you left off on a new device with nothing lost. When I think of end user computing digital transformation strategies, I now have to think of those as a serious alternatives, especially for companies that are Google Suite centric (not sure about O365).

Gartner's Emerging Technology Roadmap provides a peer-based view of how organizations plan to adopt technologies over a 12- to a 24-month time period. CIOs and IT leaders at midsize enterprises can use this infographic to benchmark their adoption plans with their peers and to review key adoption trends. Analysis of this year’s adoption plans revealed seven key trends across three themes — remote work, productivity and operations.

WHY IT MATTERS: I like visuals like these to play a game with my CIO colleagues. It goes like this: 1- print the chart in B&W 2- have CIO circle which technologies they have deployed in their organization 3- show the diagram in color and spot 3.1- the red dots they have circled 3.2- the green dots they hav *not* circled 4- guess how much time and $$ you need to align to the chart 5- have a chat about enterprise architecture and digital strategic planning ;-) Enjoy the game!

WHY IT MATTERS: I agree that hybrid collaboration, ransomware & automation are 2022 priorities for CIOs but feel that energy & blockchain may not be very high the priority list of most CIOs outside of government.
