B2B surpassing B2C in digital #eCommerce as revenue skyrockets says Gartner

B2B surpassing B2C in digital #eCommerce as revenue skyrockets says Gartner | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

As B2B buyers become more digitally savvy, they prefer less human interaction and expect more from their digital interaction. COVID-19 has accelerated this expectation. B2B buyers expect a similar shopping experience to B2C buyers. This means B2B buyers expect the digital commerce platform to understand them and anticipate their needs as a sales representative might do. They expect better tools for researching and comparing products. They want to engage with organizations digitally without having to resort to a call or email to get a quick response and a good deal.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: B2B clearly is the next frontier for eCommerce. Underlying this is the need to gain customer understanding and possibly direct connection, especially for manufacturers.

Alibaba Unveils New #Manufacturing #Digital #Factory that enables small-batch orders through automation & robotics

Alibaba Unveils New #Manufacturing #Digital #Factory that enables small-batch orders through automation & robotics | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

At an early stage, apparel was identified as the starting point for Xunxi – a sector in which the lengthy production cycles and high inventory levels have long been a problem for small and large players alike. Powered by new technologies such as real-time resourcing, process and cost planning, automated in-house logistics and Xunxi’s manufacturing operating system, the factory is able to produce small-batch orders at reasonable costs and with shorter delivery times, consequently increasing manufacturing efficiency from 25% to an average of 55%.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is a huge step forward and a sign of the times: manufacturing automation. Fueled by digital, automation, and robots, this enables production of smaller batches economically. When this is rolled out at full scale - I assume it still requires development and lots of tweaking - we can expect retailers to shorten the time from idea to production. with eCommerce, it enables the make-to-order that was made popular by Dell computers in the late 1990s: onl;y build the computer when an order has been placed. Expand this idea to t-shirts and you can see why this new Alibaba production facility is so important...

3 technologies will help recover from #covid-19 crisis:  manufacturing automation, shipment tracking, delivery robots | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The coronavirus outbreak will continue to propel funding, acquisitions, partnerships, and experimentation by brands and retailers as they are forced to grapple with global supply challenges posed by our increasingly interdependent world.

Regardless of the coronavirus’s impact on the global economy, we will surely face a similar situation in the future; brands, retailers, and their supply chains will need to be prepared.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: once we get over the health crisis, we will need to address the economic crisis. Key supply chain technologies will offer retailers and manufacturers solutions to reduce cost and their dependency on global trade fluctuations.

Impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution on Supply Chains HT @JimMarous @MikeQuindazzi @wef #banking #AI #IoT #robotics #blockchain #wearable #AR #Analytics #voicefirst | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Disruptive technologies are transforming all end-to-end steps in production and business models in most sectors of the economy. The products that consumers demand, factory processes and footprints, and the management of global supply chains are being re-shaped to an unprecedented degree and at unprecedented pace. Industry leaders who were consulted believe that new technological solutions heralded by the Fourth Industrial Revolution – such as advanced robotics, autonomous systems and additive manufacturing – will revolutionize traditional ways of creating value. As the costs of deploying technology continue to fall, international differentials in labour costs will no longer be a decisive factor in choosing the location of production.

The resulting greater spatial and temporal flexibility brought about by technology will bring locations of production and sale closer together, and drive major changes in the design of future value and supply chains. These trends will change the shape and form of globalization, and thereby impact the trajectory of goods. Regional and local flows will become more important, to the detriment of intercontinental trade.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the world economic forum keeps putting out great reports on the impact of digital transformation. I love the illustrations, great summary of key trends and their adoption. Must read.

The Death Cross Of US Manufacturing

The Death Cross Of US Manufacturing | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The theme of both the robot-ization of the global workforce and the populist desire for a hike in the minimum wage have been popular and ongoing ones here at Zero Hedge. However, never has it been more clear just where the future lies than this chart from BofAML's Michael Hartnett... As he says, "we are long robots, and short human beings."

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: robots will grow and bring back manufacturing to "developed" countries such as the US but they won't bring back jobs.

Here's when #robots will start beating #humans at every task @Oxford @Yale | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
A survey of AI researchers tallied predictions for when machines will start beating humans at everything from LEGO assembly to essay-writing.
Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I shy away from these projections but here it comes from scholars at Oxford and Yale so I give more value. Moreover it tracks with the projections I have read from the Singularity is Near and other books on the matter. Moreover I like the visualization because it shows concrete tasks that we can all relate to. And look at the timeline, remembering that 2026 is less than 10 years from now...

Amazon has developed an AI fashion designer via @O_Laborne

Amazon has developed an AI fashion designer via @O_Laborne | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
An Amazon team at Lab126, a research center based in San Francisco, has developed an algorithm that learns about a particular style of fashion from images, and can then generate new items in similar styles from scratch—essentially, a simple AI fashion designer. The approach is crude and hardly ready for Project Runway, but it hints at the possibilities.
Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

Not only does this experiment show potential for AI to enter the protected world of human creativity, it also signals we soon will be able to go from idea to design to production to sales using AI, automated 3D printing factories and eCommerce. Will we soon see a fully autonomous fashion retailer with no designers, no production staff, no stores that create and sell original clothing?

Will robots steal our jobs? #video #french

Will robots steal our jobs? #video #french | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Farid Mheir's insight:

Excellent tv programme (in french) that reviews the robot penetration in business today and its potential impact on jobs in the coming years.
