La popularité des services payants de visionnement en ligne a dépassé pour une première fois celle des services de télévision par câble ou fibre optique dans les foyers québécois. L’enquête intitulée Portrait numérique des foyers québécois révèle en effet que 71 % des adultes québécois sont abonnés à au moins un service payant de visionnement en ligne tel Netflix, Amazon Prime ou Disney+ alors que 66 % sont abonnés à un service de télévision par câble ou fibre optique. L’enquête rapporte que le taux d’abonnement à un service de télévision par câble ou fibre optique a diminué de 6 points de pourcentage au cours de la dernière année et de 13 points de pourcentage depuis 2018.

“Self-hosting” is a practice that pretty much describes itself: running your own internet services, typically on hardware you own and have at home. This contrasts with relying on products from large tech companies, which the user has no direct involvement in. A self-hoster controls it all, from the hardware used to the configuration of the software.

WHY IT MATTERS:  everything is now offered "as a service" in a cloud-based solution. But for some it is adequate to self host given the availability of cheap computing devices, high speed home internet and an explosion of very good open source solutions.

20 years ago Apple seized music, and turned it into a lever for its broader business. It failed to do the same to TV, and lost control of music, but won massively in games, where it now makes more money than the entire global digital music industry. Now, perhaps, it’s looking at advertising.

WHY IT MATTERS: the end of 3rd party cookies will impact advertising the most. This chart highlights the 50% of revenues that go to different players (including 15% unknown!). What irritates me most is the 7% to agencies that, unfortunately, seem to do very little to earn that amount in my experience...

We won’t just connect the local online shopper to the local store, but also the local store to the online shopper. Content will increasingly become hyperlocal. Beauty Counter last month announced it was opening a live streaming studio in the back of its retail shop, clever use of retail space in a real estate market desperately looking for new uses of it.

WHY IT MATTERS: makes sense, turn your store into a broadcast studio and use your personnel to liveStreamShop to clients on the web and serve customers that drop in locally. The store reclaims a purpose, from a mini-warehouse to a service destination and broadcast center. This will require high bandwith, wifi or 5G and clienteling tools for vendors to answer client's questions about products, service or their orders. Fun times ahead.

Meanwhile, as more people in poorer countries gain internet access, Wikipedia is becoming a truly global resource. The encyclopedia’s sub-sites are organised by language, not by nationality. Using this method, the richest Wikipedias—as measured by the share of speakers of each language who are active editors—tend to cluster in rich Western countries.

WHY IT MATTERS: after 20 years, wikipedia is proof that "the web" can live up to its potential where the masses can contribute valuable information for the greater good. That being said, wikipedia remains a solution driven by english-speaking white males. The future lies in improving its diversity and maybe transferring some of its learnings to facebook, twitter and other social media. WHY IT MATTERS: sharing content across different websites, eCommerce, in-store displays and new devices (ie. Alexa, siri) is difficult. This survey provides insights into the reasons why sharing is difficult. Be aware this is biased towards headless CMS, but the conclusions appear valid IMHO.

I’m typing this in my sweatpants, in my living room, because our offices have been closed since mid-March as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. My internet goes out approximately twice a day. I exercise in the same space in which I answer emails and Slack messages. I sort of mentally crumple up my day as I move from the living room to the kitchen for dinner. I am just a small part of an accidental grand experiment: Do knowledge workers really need the office?

Audiences around the world are shifting their behaviors to be more mobile-oriented than ever before. But what are the underlying dynamics driving mobile media and app activity amongst consumers?

WHY IT MATTERS: mobile first is a reality, especially if you sell online, so you have to be mobile friendly and present. However, building an app is not a wise investment it seems anymore as people don't know how to find/discover new apps and only 32% download apps to their phone. My conclusion: make sure your technologies and designs are mobile friendly and embed your content in a s many popular mobile apps as possible - Facebook, Amazon of course but also others, see in the report.

Google is working on a new app for its Pixel smartphones that will use hardware sensors to detect an auto accident and automatically call emergency services if a person fails to respond.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: mobile phones are very personal devices that you carry with you all the time. I expect that solutions like this one, always listening in the background and reacting when a specific event occurs, will become the norm in the future. Already Alexa-siri-google are listening constantly, now solutions that merge the other sensors of the device - accelerometer, etc. - are natural extensions. They can be used for good as here - or for bad as with eavesdropping solutions that Edward Snowden made popular. I am surprised that few business applications have leveraged this already, for worker security in dangerous environment (fall detection, broken glass detection, earthquake detection, etc.) can all be included into business apps where the issues of privacy can be weighed against worker security and safety, especially for workers on the road or working in areas where they are alone (woods, etc.)

Driving safety is the focus of my personal research stemming from my job with the Postal Service. While I research accident theory and causation and ways to prevent, we do explore the possibilities of technology in case of a vehicle accident. We have technology in place in the scanners that mail carriers take with them to detect emergency situations. I personally worked with a supervisor that saved an employee's life due to his skilled use of that technology. This article provides information on another tool that can be beneficial to the safety of drivers in any company.

An analysis on the 2019 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Web Content Management by Dries Buytaert raises interesting point: there are 2 real leaders, Adobe + Acquia | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

In mature markets like Web Content Management, there is almost always a single proprietary leader and a single Open Source leader. There is Oracle and MongoDB. Splunk and Elastic. VMWare and Docker. Gitlab and Github. That is why I believe that next year it will be Acquia and Adobe at the very top of the WCM Magic Quadrant. Sitecore and Episerver will continue to fight for third place among companies who prefer a Microsoft-centric approach. I was not surprised to see Sitecore move down this year as they work to overcome technical product debt and cloud transition, leading to strange decisions like acquiring a services company.

WHY IT MATTERS: this analysis is spot on. There are 2 main platforms for large enterprises, Adobe and Acquia. I find the rise of episerver in the Microsoft area, from an ecommerce company into a full web platform very much worth taking notice.

Gartner defines web content management (WCM) as the process of creating, managing and delivering content over one or more digital channels through the use of specific management solutions based on a core repository. These solutions may be procured as commercial products, open-source tools, cloud services or hosted services.
The functionality of WCM solutions goes beyond simply publishing webpages. It also includes:
  • Content creation functions, such as templating, workflow and change management
  • Repositories that organize and provide metadata about content
  • Library services, such as check-in/check-out, version control and security
  • Website management features, such as layout, menus and navigation
  • Content deployment functions
  • Personalization and analytics capabilities
  • The ability to integrate well, via APIs, with adjacent technologies such as digital commerce platforms, social media platforms, marketing automation platforms and broader digital experience platforms (DXPs)

WHY IT MATTERS: quadrants are very interesting because they show progress year over year and provide insights into the market leaders and key trends. So take the included solutions and their relative position with a grain of salt, but read the content to understand how complex the world of web content management has become. Choice is difficult, at best.

WHY IT MATTERS: many of my clients will select a digital platform to support their transformation - Adobe, Salesforce, Microsoft, SAP, etc. Platforms sound than a collection of best of breed solutions that all evolve in different directions with much different timing - sometimes ending in an acquisition by a platform such as magento by Adobe or Hybris by SAP. They hope that by doing so they will de-risk their projects and surf on the coat tails of an integrated solution with a wise and aggressive roadmap. Unfortunately, betting on the wrong horse means years of stagnation and pain - ask any executive that has selected IBM websphere commerce platform for their horror stories. This article provide 4 key elements to look for in your platform selection to help determine if they have a long term future.
