La popularité des services payants de visionnement en ligne a dépassé pour une première fois celle des services de télévision par câble ou fibre optique dans les foyers québécois. L’enquête intitulée Portrait numérique des foyers québécois révèle en effet que 71 % des adultes québécois sont abonnés à au moins un service payant de visionnement en ligne tel Netflix, Amazon Prime ou Disney+ alors que 66 % sont abonnés à un service de télévision par câble ou fibre optique. L’enquête rapporte que le taux d’abonnement à un service de télévision par câble ou fibre optique a diminué de 6 points de pourcentage au cours de la dernière année et de 13 points de pourcentage depuis 2018.

Interesting question: what technology are we hearing about today that will actually be everywhere in 20 years? blockchain? VR? AR? metaverse? quantum? Pretty tough to predict. I put my money on blockchain + AR.

Choose more than one vendor solution, if necessary. Vendors in the enterprise search functionality segment have cognitive search solutions that apply to the widest number of use cases and include website search and digital commerce. However, the actual features offered by these vendors vary greatly and may not be the best choice for digital commerce. For example, some vendors in the digital commerce functionality segment have sophisticated tools for merchandising that many more general-purpose solutions lack. It is reasonable and not uncommon for enterprises to have more than one cognitive search solution depending on use cases, data sources, content types, and other factors.

WHY IT MATTERS: interesting review of cognitive search solution - read AI-driven. What sparked my interest most is the note from Forrester that companies should "choose more than one vendor solution" as it probably means that the field remains immature. I'll know soon as I need to pick a solution from the list - or maybe multiple? ;-)

Key Findings

  1. The percentage of revenue surveyed organizations generated from digital commerce increased substantially in 2019.
  2. The classic choice between “buy or build” has shifted to “buy and build.” The majority of survey respondents bought at least part of their digital commerce platform, but also extended or customized it.
  3. Cross channel 360-degree view of the customer is increasing, but slowly due to its complexities.The top three reasons for embracing digital commerce are to grow revenue, drive toward a greater digital business initiative and improve customer satisfaction.

Beauty Counter last month announced it was opening a live streaming studio in the back of its retail shop, clever use of retail space in a real estate market desperately looking for new uses of it.

WHY IT MATTERS: makes sense, turn your store into a broadcast studio and use your personnel to liveStreamShop to clients on the web and serve customers that drop in locally. The store reclaims a purpose, from a mini-warehouse to a service destination and broadcast center. This will require high bandwith, wifi or 5G and clienteling tools for vendors to answer client's questions about products, service or their orders. Fun times ahead.

One of the questions I see and hear quite often, is, "can Shopify be a marketplace? Like Etsy or Amazon? I want my sellers to have their own controls". So what exactly is the problem here? Shopify is great for eCommerce. Why can't we just hit an Easy button and make it be a marketplace, too, voila??

WHY IT MATTERS: shopify as a marketplace is question I've been asking for months (or any other eCom solution). After all, once you build your own eCommerce website on Shopify, all the components are in place to create a marketplace: products, categories, inventory, etc. After all, a marketplace is nothing more than a superset, a combination of all those individual shops?

Well, not really. A marketplace is more than a collection of products. It is a destination that provides a single user account, consolidated shipping and delivery, a single destination to resolve customer issues. It is a service, not a technology.

Thus, even though Shopify has the *technology* to build a marketplace, it does not (yet?) have the infrastructure to provide the *service* that a marketplace requires.

WHY IT MATTERS: with customer experience journeys and omni-channel integration the primary focus of marketing teams, web content management (WCMS) solutions are growing in scope to become digital experience platforms (DXP). Or so Gartner says. My recommendation is to be very critical as the implementation of those platforms become large-scale projects with impacts across many business units, leading to easier integration but often solutions you may not need or may not implement for years. Sometimes it is better to go with a smaller solution than a full fledged platform to deliver value short term, especially in less mature organizations...

WHY IT MATTERS: mobile first is a reality, especially if you sell online, so you have to be mobile friendly and present. However, building an app is not a wise investment it seems anymore as people don't know how to find/discover new apps and only 32% download apps to their phone. My conclusion: make sure your technologies and designs are mobile friendly and embed your content in a s many popular mobile apps as possible - Facebook, Amazon of course but also others, see in the report.

WHY IT MATTERS: website page load speed - it's performance - has direct impact on the conversion rate. The faster a site loads, especially on mobile devices, the better are its chances that users will continue exploring, enjoy their experience and possible convert (ie. buy your product/service). To achieve this there are a myriad of things that must be done, starting from design decisions all the way to technology you deploy. This is BIG and has been known for years, with Google being the first in late 1990s to present a very simple home page for its search engine. Yet it seems that we do not learn...
