At LinkedIn, we use machine learning technology widely to optimize our products: for instance, ranking search results, advertisements, and updates in the news feed, or recommending people, jobs, articles, and learning opportunities to members. An important component of this technology stack is a knowledge graph that provides input signals to machine learning models and data insight pipelines to power LinkedIn products. Making sense of relations between those entities is a difficult task and this paper explains how LinkedIn does it. Not for the technically faint of heart.

Internet infrastructure giant Akamai last week released a special State of the Internet report. Normally, the quarterly accounting of noteworthy changes in distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks doesn’t delve into attacks on specific customers. But this latest Akamai report makes an exception in describing in great detail the record-sized attack against KrebsOnSecurity.com in September, the largest such assault it has ever mitigated.

This rethought is about keeping the workspace that we interact with on a daily basis both tidy and organized. Our password storage scheme relies on three different layers of cryptographic protections, as the figure below illustrates. WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT I expect all cloud service providers to treat my information as confidential, starting with my passwords. With the care and attention that dropbox protects its password, you can see how top tier cloud providers - Google, Microsoft, Apple, Facebook - will most often be more secure than anything you can do, even if you are a fairly large corporation. Trust cloud services as they are probably more secure than whatever your internal IT can provide. It is their bread and butter and their reputation - and ultimately their whole business - relies on it.

With new neural network architectures popping up every now and then, it’s hard to keep track of them all. Knowing all the abbreviations being thrown around (DCIGN, BiLSTM, DCGAN, anyone?) can be a bit overwhelming at first. So I decided to compose a cheat sheet containing many of those architectures. Most of these are neural networks, some are completely different beasts. Though all of these architectures are presented as novel and unique, when I drew the node structures… their underlying relations started to make more sense.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT Although I've never been a fan of the transit map analogy, I find this one captures one key message for marketing professionals: digital marketing is different than traditional marketing in the tools, technologies and skills required. As the diagram shows, they are more akin to software programming than they are of the traditional marketing curriculum. For those that do not yet have those skills in-house, get help. For those that have the skills, make sure they are sharp and remain up-to-date because this technology world changes rapidly.
