Are #robots that follow pickers in warehouse is the future of work for the #retail industry? Productivity + Accuracy are selling points - may also help fight the labour shortage for menial tasks | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Workers can pick 2x-3x faster with near-100% accuracy and less labor, delivering higher productivity and a better workplace.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS:  robots are leaving the factory floor to enter the workplace. First stop, warehouses. This new generation of autonomous robots can carry orders from one place to another, navigating against the human and robot traffic.

Amazon opens GO GROCERY, a bigger version of the camera-spying convenience store they opened in 2016 —so @arstechnica tried to steal its fruit and it worked | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

It's like other Amazon Go stores, only bigger. But it's a meaningful difference. Interesting story on how a guy walked into an Amazon GO store and was able to steal things.

TLDR;
Guy walks in, puts items in bag
Goes to bathroom, changes outfit and look
Continue walking and picking up items
Amazon only charges for first batch of items.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: since the launch of amazon GO convenience store in 2016, the concept of walk-in, grab stuff, leave, felt perfect for small orders (sandwich, drinks and cookies for lunch anyone). They just opened a grocery store now, which has the potential to disrupt the retail market more profoundly (Amazon bought WholeFood a while back). This article explains how the store works but also uncovers a flaw in the camera system: if you change your appearance during a visit the system can loose track of you. Interesting use case...

Why @zapier replaced daily standup meetings with a robot and managed to be more efficient

Why @zapier replaced daily standup meetings with a robot and managed to be more efficient | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

In our Strategic Apps group at Zapier, we've figured out a way to do standups in a timely manner, make them minimally disruptive, and not add a burden to anyone else. To cut to the chase, we delegated most of the work to a robot, and we do it all asynchronously.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I like the use of technology when it can reduce tedious repetitive tasks. This is a great example. Agile team perform daily standup meetings which are supposed to be quick information sessions to keep everyone abreast of progress and reduce blindspots. They often turn out to be too long and unproductive when people don't follow rules. Zapier development team has leveraged a bot to perform that task and hopefully achieve same results without wasting people's time. I find it an interesting use of technology.

Have we been focussing on the wrong #chatbot use case? Gartner thinks so & claims chatbots are better for Modern Workers than for customer service. I tend to agree, or maybe they'll become modern v... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The proliferation of chatbots in the modern workplace calls for IT leaders to create a conversational platform strategy that ensures an effective solution for employees, customers and key partners.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: chatbots were supposed to solve all customer service issues. That was 5 years ago. Today, we see them deployed with limited value on websites mostly as pre-screeners to qualify leads. As Gartner proposes here, maybe their use is better within organizations to help workers be more productive. Or maybe we're just creating a new "clippy" office assistant

Archillect [archive + intellect] is an AI created to discover and share stimulating visual content over social media channels. She is a living inspiration archive. She is a digital muse.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: appreciation for things that are "beautiful" would have been impossible to code before neural nets, deep learning and other machine learning became available. If data is the new oil, this is the gas station: Discovering millions of datasets on the web, Google creates a search engine to discover them all - an essential component for #AI but great for web ... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Dataset Search launches publicly with an index of 25 million datasets, helping scientists, journalists, students, data geeks to find data.

Dataset Search also gives us a snapshot of the data out there on the Web. Here are a few highlights. The largest topics that the datasets cover are geosciences, biology, and agriculture. The majority of governments in the world publish their data and describe it with schema.org. The United States leads in the number of open government datasets available, with more than 2 million. And the most popular data formats? Tables–you can find more than 6 million of them on Dataset Search.

Top minds in machine learning predict where #AI is going in 2020 #mustRead #geeky

Top minds in machine learning predict where #AI is going in 2020 #mustRead #geeky | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Machine learning is continuing to shape business and society, and the researchers and experts VentureBeat spoke with see a number of trends on the horizon:
Advances in natural language models were a major story of 2019 as Transformers fueled great leaps forward. Look for more variations of BERT and Transformer-based models in 2020.
- The AI industry should look for ways to value model outputs beyond accuracy.
- Methods like semi-supervised learning, a neural symbolic approach to machine learning, and subfields like multitask and multimodal learning may progress in the year ahead.
- Ethical challenges related to biometric data like speech recordings will likely continue to be controversial.
- Compilers and approaches like quantization may grow in popularity for machine learning frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow as ways to optimize model performance.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I find this list of "predictions" interesting because it shows that AI is maturing and becoming much more complex, combining multiple structures, methods, algorithms to improve accuracy and move beyond simple statistical inference. Plus the fact that NVIDIA model has 8 BILLION nodes blew my mind... ;-)

Samsung “Neon” Artificial Intelligence Project Video on "artificial humans" at #CES2020 - listen to the 5 min video & expect your brain to be blown away! Think of potential for #personalized video ... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Samsung “Neon” project leader Pranav Mistry has confirmed that the project aims to create lifelike avatars using artificial intelligence. These virtual humans are based on captured data, but can generate their own expressions, movements and dialog in multiple languages. Mistry belives that one day soon a digital human could extend its role to become a part of our everyday lives, whether it be a virtual news anchor, virtual receptionist, or even an AI-generated film star. Read more for the leaked video and additional information.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: realistic looking avatars is essential to convey realism in many retailTech use cases from customer support to online video promotions.
