Why Google Maps is GREAT and Apple maps is barely ok at best - a very detailed look - Thank you @gnat for these great finds | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Google has gathered so much data, in so many areas, that it’s now crunching it together and creating features that Apple can’t make—surrounding Google Maps with a moat of time.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: Google has been capturing and translating data for a very long time and by doing so it can provide digital services that way better than anything else their competitors can do. This example of maps is just one in many but this one is particularly well documented. Kudos.

FINALLY something that helps improve #privacy on social networks: Facebook will use facial recognition to tell you when people upload your picture

FINALLY something that helps improve #privacy on social networks: Facebook will use facial recognition to tell you when people upload your picture | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

If anyone uploads a profile picture that includes your face, Facebook will alert you of that, too. “We’re doing this to prevent people from impersonating others on Facebook,” the company wrote on its blog Tuesday.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: anyone can post anything on Facebook or elsewhere on the net. Having a tool that spots your face on pictures to warn you may be the ultimate privacy-notification to come out of Facebook. I hope that other holders of large databases of pictures - especially Apple and Google because of their mobile phones - would do the same.

Algorithm-Driven Design: How #AI Is Changing Design

Algorithm-Driven Design: How #AI Is Changing Design | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

I’ve been following the idea of algorithm-driven design for several years now and have collected some practical examples. The tools of the approach can help us to construct a UI, prepare assets and content, and personalize the user experience. The information, though, has always been scarce and hasn’t been systematic. However, in 2016, the technological foundations of these tools became easily accessible, and the design community got interested in algorithms, neural networks and artificial intelligence (AI). Now is the time to rethink the modern role of the designer.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS

We think of AI having an impact in fields that require human repetitive work but rarely think it applies to creative activities such as web or logo design. Well of course, you are wrong and this paper explains why with a number of very powerful examples and tools.

How to Browse the Web and Leave No Trace

How to Browse the Web and Leave No Trace | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
On today’s web it’s hard to set a (digital) foot online without it attracting dozens of trackers and log entries, as companies look to learn everything about you and sell that data on to advertisers. To hide you’ve got a few tools at your disposal, many of which we’ve talked about in the past, and all of which add up to a largely anonymous browsing experience. What we can’t do is promise 100 percent that you won’t be tracked—we’re not privy to the inner workings of the FBI or your employer’s IT system—but this is as much as you can do.

Only 12% of Americans Use a pwd mgmt software says @pewresearch report on Cybersecurity1

Only 12% of Americans Use a pwd mgmt software says @pewresearch report on Cybersecurity1 | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

This survey finds that a majority of Americans have directly experienced some form of data theft or fraud, that a sizeable share of the public thinks that their personal data have become less secure in recent years, and that many lack confidence in various institutions to keep their personal data safe from misuse. In addition, many Americans are failing to follow digital security best practices in their own personal lives, and a substantial majority expects that major cyberattacks will be a fact of life in the future.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

As I wrote recently in the "Pyramid of Digital Needs" (fmcs.digital/blog/pyramid-of-digital-needs/), security is one of the most basic needs. When we don't feel secure and private then it is difficult to enjoy the benefits of social networks and all the other tools that digital now provides. It is essential that corporations address security and privacy in a meaningful way in order for their clients, employees and partners to use their new digital tools and embrace the digital transformation that most enterprises have recently embarked on.

Public Perceptions of Privacy and Security in the Post-Snowden Era is Low says Report from @pewresearch

Public Perceptions of Privacy and Security in the Post-Snowden Era is Low says Report from @pewresearch  | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The majority of adults in a new survey by the Pew Research Center feel that their privacy is being challenged along such core dimensions as the security of their personal information and their ability to retain confidentiality.

When Americans are asked what comes to mind when they hear the word “privacy,” there are patterns to their answers. When responses are grouped into themes, the largest block of answers ties to concepts of security, safety, and protection. For many others, notions of secrecy and keeping things “hidden” are top of mind when thinking about privacy.

The Power of Data As the Next Big Thing in Content Marketing @HBR  | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
The diminishing effectiveness of conventional advertising and the rise of social media have led more and more brands to embrace content marketing. More and more companies are seeing themselves not just as advertisers, but as publishers, launching digital newsrooms, podcasts, and other forms of branded content in order keep their brands, perspectives, and value propositions in front of customers.
Farid Mheir's insight:

I wrote about this in the past numerous times and it is great to see HBR and others recognize this important trend: companies are sitting on huge amounts of information they can use to extract meaningful information and share it with their clients and employees to attract and retain them.

The Wall Street Journal did an interesting piece looking at Google, privacy and the extent of their knowledge (as well as other entities like Facebook). I suggest you read it for the details. The following image gives some insight into just how much Google has on one WSJ reporter.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

On this Data Privacy Day 2017, I thought I would review what Google, Apple, Facebook and others know about me. Unfortunately, it looks like this information is difficult to find and pretty much the only data we can find is from Google. So, let's assume Apple, Facebook, twitter, and others know as much if not more.

Your #browser has a 'fingerprint' & online #trackers use it to follow your online activity #PrivacyAware  | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
Online tracking is no longer about "cookies." New technology helps trackers link online breadcrumbs — including across devices — through browser settings, battery levels and other details.
Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

We are being tracked everywhere as I reported in a previous article about behavioral tracking: http://fmcs.digital/blog/behavioral-tracking-explained-in-9min-video-by-gary_kovacs-via-ted-mustsee-privacyaware-dataprivacyday/

This new tracking method is very clever as it uses your browser configuration settings to derive an almost unique fingerprint to track you everywhere, even in the absence of cookies or ad beacons on a web page. On this Data Privacy day 2017, be aware, and be careful.

Power of #socialGraph: How Facebook Tells Your Friends You're Safe in a Disaster in Under 5min via @HighScal  | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Only Facebook could create Safety Check, not because of resources as you might expect, but because Facebooks lets employees build crazy things like Safety Check and because only Facebook has 1.5 billion geographically distributed users, with a degree of separation between them of only 4.74 edges, and only Facebook has users who are fanatical about reading their news feeds. A small team couldn’t build a big pipeline and index, so they wrote some hacky PHP and effectively got the job done at scale.

This paper details how Facebook build Safety Check

Farid Mheir's insight:

Essential read on this new technology from Facebook that was made possible because of the social graph that Facebook builds. Impressive if only because the solution was easy to build.
