Voyage Commander is a state-of-the-art self-driving robot taxi that has a number of important limitations and sheds light into what is possible and what is not | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

When Commander detects that something in the road ahead cannot be handled by itself, it gracefully transitions control to Telessist, our novel remote assistance technology. Telessist enables our robotaxi service to scale quicker, safely driving riders through any scenario that the world can throw at us.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: a very interesting article about a robot taxi system, how it works and its limitations. Fun read to understand what is possible and what is not in self driving tech today. This is important because many of digital transformation use case depend on this for profitability (for example eCommerce delivery cost should reduce drastically when this available).

This post summarizes what I think about when I refer to #digitalTransformation: What comes after smartphones? via @BenedictEvans | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

There’s an old saying that the first fifty years of the car industry were about creating car companies and working out what cars should look like, and the second fifty years were about what happened once everyone had a car - they were about McDonalds and Walmart, suburbs and the remaking of the world around the car, for good and of course bad. The innovation in cars became everything around the car. One could suggest the same today about smartphones - now the innovation comes from everything else that happens around them.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this post is a bit theoretical for someone not bathing in digital transformation all day as I do (mostly). It explores what could come next but more importantly stresses an important fact: we now have a new platform - the mobile phone - in our pockets that has the potential to transform our world. We have started to see this with eCommerce - physical retail stores become irrelevant and we can price compare from anywhere - but we have yet to see the real impact of eCommerce+mobile+cloud+5G. THIS is what I think about most days...

AI talent remains limited event with 500K people globally with #AI skills via @jfgagne @elementai | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

We estimate that globally, there will be 86,000 authors pre-publishing fundamental and applied AI research papers on arXiv in all of 2020; and that there are approximately 478,000 people globally with the specialized AI technical skills needed for building an AI product. You can read the full report with further breakdowns of the data here. Below I share why understanding the talent pool can help explain the friction in getting AI to work.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: AI and more specifically machine learning and deep learning skills are in high demand but it appears from this annual update that demand remains higher than supply.

Stuff that #AI is good for is human augmentation: the case here transforms a web page into a video clip #AI #augmentedHumans | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

URL2Video, a research prototype pipeline to automatically convert a web page into a short video, given temporal and visual constraints provided by the content owner. URL2Video extracts assets (text, images, or videos) and their design styles (including fonts, colors, graphical layouts, and hierarchy) from HTML sources and organizes the visual assets into a sequence of shots, while maintaining a look-and-feel similar to the source page. Given a user-specified aspect ratio and duration, it then renders the repurposed materials into a video that is ideal for product and service advertising.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: creating videos from web page content illustrates the power of AI-augmented human capabilities. Expect this in all fields: humans create content and AI generates alternative options that are convincing enough to fool others into thinking "a human did it". Generative design, text summary, netflix thumbnail creation photoshop image improvements are all examples that can be leveraged today.

Don't believe your eyes + Fact check EVERYTHING from now on: #deepFake images are being used to influence and create alternate reality - How a fake persona laid the groundwork for a Hunter Biden co... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

A deepfake was used to create the fake author of the dubious Hunter Biden report. Martin Aspen, allegedly a Swiss security analyst who authored a report about the business activities of Joe Biden's son in China, is a completely fictional persona, disinformation researchers have concluded, according to a report by NBC News. The researchers say the report was part of an elaborate attempt to smear Biden. Among many other indications that Aspen is a fiction, the experts concluded that photos of Aspen that appear on various social media pages were created using deepfake technology, the A.I.-based method that can create fictional faces or graph one person's head onto another's body.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: AI has been used in the past 3-4 years to generate fake images of people, create fake politicians and celebrity videos, and even generate people that never existed. It was only a question of time for the technology to be used to influence people, here in the context of US political campaign. Don't believe what you read, see and hear. Fact check EVERYTHING.

AI camera mistakes referee’s bald head for football — hilarity ensued! This is a reminder that today's #AI is not yet intelligent but rather a very good specialized image analysis that was not poss... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, smaller football teams are relying on AI-powered cameras to cast live matches through YouTube. The camera was supposed to track the ball automatically using AI and show footage on YouTube. However, the camera’s AI thought a bald linesman’s head was the ball, and repeatedly kept showing him instead of the ball in play. Fans were not happy about this, and they had to even miss the team’s lone goal because of the glitch.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is to be expected as AI is not yet intelligent, just smart enough to analyze images statistically. To become intelligent, cameras need to "know" the ball should not be attached to someone's head, should travel between players on the field and not always on the sidelines. This is possible with simple heuristics or even specialized machine learning that - combined - should deliver a better result.

I spent the better part of a summer while in grad school hard coding a light tracking solution. This was back in the 80s, wayyyyy before ML was possible. Of course my solution was not good, and the current ML solutions are much better than "classical" software programs at image analysis. So ML is great but in order to become as good as humans, they need to include knowledge about more than clever image analysis.

Artificial intelligence and its limits - An understanding of AI’s limitations is starting to sink in via @TheEconomist | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

ai’s heralds say further transformations are still to come, for better and for worse. In 2016 Geoffrey Hinton, a computer scientist who has made fundamental contributions to modern ai, remarked that “it’s quite obvious that we should stop training radiologists,” on the grounds that computers will soon be able to do everything they do, only cheaper and faster. Developers of self-driving cars, meanwhile, predict that robotaxis will revolutionise transport. Eric Schmidt, a former chairman of Google (and a former board member of The Economist’s parent company) hopes that ai could accelerate research, helping human scientists keep up with a deluge of papers and data.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: a very good article on the current state of AI, as we move on the hype cycle from the "peak of inflated expectations" to the "through of disillusionment". No matter what, machine learning has already made possible what was impossible before: image analysis (but not yet understanding, as AI would require). Still, huge progress has been made and more to come.

This Hilariously Odd Short Film Was Written by GPT-3, and it shows how far #AI text generation has come in a few years: credible and readable... but not yet "intelligent" - Where would *you* apply ... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

People have been training A.I. to write movie scripts for years, but this one is different. It showcases just how far A.I. creativity has come.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: GPT-3 is one of the most advanced text generation neural network out there. This movie is based on a script generated by this technology. It begs to wonder: where would you apply this technology in your company?

Generating blog posts variations to bring traffic to your site? Summarizing memos and other internal communications? Creating customer interactions for customer support to train against? Generating fake posts and negative reviews on your competitor Amazon store?

Already these are possible and should make us all wonder when we read something: is it real, or is it GPT-3?... ;-)

#AI to help choose the right outfit by automating the detection of clothing attributes and facilitate discovery and search #fashionTech #retailTech #eCommerce | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The challenge of search and recommending products online is increasingly being solved with data science as e-tailers compete on personalisation. New e-commerce platform Psykhe makes recommendations based on personality traits by identifying both the user and the products; its models can assign products a “personality profile”, informed by traits such as openness or neuroticism, in addition to traditional details, without human input. Resale platform Rebag has developed a universal taxonomy for designer handbags to better appraise products. And Facebook recently unveiled GrokNet, a tool that automatically identifies and describes items in pictures to help people sell items on its marketplace.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: an essential part of shopping is product search and discovery. Easy to do in stores: just walk around, look at products on racks. More difficult to do in eCommerce websites. Technology, and especially AI, is being pulled to help identify product characteristics automatically so that searching for a "confortable summer dress with flower patterns" becomes possible.

Travel 2040 provides a futuristic (idealized?) vision of the future of #travel where #Climate Emergency Force a Revolution in the #travel Industry via @Euromonitor | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The future travel experience will be personalised, delivering seamless and safe services that are high value, low touch and consumer-centric, thanks to an accelerated digital transformation post-pandemic. These new advances in technology will usher in a new era of automation, requiring upskilling for employees to provide greater levels of high-quality service. Tracking climate impact across consumers, brands and destinations will be critical for building resilience, agility and speed to combat future risks and accelerate the green transition.
This white paper outlines a vision for how consumers will book and experience travel in 2040, exploring how technology and the need for sustainability could change the travel experience over the next 20 years. In particular, this analysis will focus on the future of travel — exploring what online travel agents, urban mobility, air travel and hotels will look like.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: short white paper on what travel *may* look like in 20 years. I think it is idealistic and far fetched but there are elements in there that feel very probable (ie. renting clothes instead of packing your own, robots that carry your luggage, AR-VR to help with travel planning). Not saying if this future is good or bad, but will certainly be very digital. Thoughts?

Software Performance Engineering: Save Us From the End of Moore’s Law? - via @IEEESpectrum @Science

Software Performance Engineering: Save Us From the End of Moore’s Law? - via @IEEESpectrum @Science | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Performance engineering will be riskier than Moore’s Law ever was. Companies may not know the benefits of their efforts until after they’ve invested substantial programmer time. And speed-ups may be sporadic, uneven, and unpredictable. But as we reach the physical limits of microprocessors, focusing on software performance engineering seems like the best option for most programmers to get more out of their computers.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is a well known fact, developers are lazy as often the hardware is more powerful than what they need to do the job. But as we reach limits of hardware and as AI improves it seems that we may be able to throw software at the problem and have machine algorithms to improve the performance of systems. The impacts are high, from allowing less powerful hardware to run your app or reducing the cost in high volume applications (think data centers or the billions of internet of things devices).
