Five metrics for CEOs to measure digital success via @McKinsey can help craft quantifiable metrics for #CTO, #CDO, VP #digitalTransformation or VP #innovation success factors

Five metrics for CEOs to measure digital success via @McKinsey can help craft quantifiable metrics for #CTO, #CDO, VP #digitalTransformation or VP #innovation success factors | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

As organizations launch more and more digital initiatives, CEOs must monitor whether they are delivering business results. These metrics are ones to watch.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: "digital transformation" often means anything and everything. These 5 markers can help you define quantifiable metrics to ground resources in concrete, actionable activities. Too often, unfortunately, are CDOs "chief digital officers" , CTO "chief technology officers" or "VP digital transformation" or "VP innovation" tasked with vague requirements that are aspirational ("move the organization in the digital world") or qualitative ("coordinate actions and support executives in the digital transformation"). After a few years of workshops, evaluations, and pilot projects they often fail to deliver meaningful business impacting metrics.

Random Employee Chats is the modern version (read covid-required) of impromptu water cooler meetings at @Cloudflare - and it is clear that random pairings are not enough in large organizations | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

We developed the Random Employee Chats application internally, with the goal of recreating the pre-pandemic informal interactions. Here's how we moved from a shared spreadsheet to Cloudflare Workers to automate the entire process.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: interesting solution developed at Cloudflare, a technology company, to facilitate conversations across the organization. The paper highlights the challenges of making random chats truly random (and useful). As work from home and remote work become the norm post-covid, this will become required in all organizations. Not only large distributed companies but also startups that decide to go full work from home.

The Rise of the CTO - 2021 IBM CEO study highlights the importance of #technology for CEOs - trend or #tunnelVision from @IBM? Thanks to @SeanMoffitt @FutureproofingN | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

We surveyed more than 3,000 CEOs around the world to learn how they are positioning their organizations for success after COVID-19. Five key factors set outperforming CEOs apart.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: technology is high on CEO radar of priorities as digital transformations shifts from front-office (web, social, search, all areas of the marketing CMO) to the back office (manufacturing, security, IOT, cloud, AI). CIOs play a role but many times they can't cut it so the CTO comes in. Could be a fundamental trend, or simply tunnel vision (it is an IBM survey after all ;-). Thanks to Sean Moffitt - Future Proofing Next guru! Many more insights in the full report.

The next normal arrives: Trends that will define 2021—and beyond via @McKinsey

The next normal arrives: Trends that will define 2021—and beyond via @McKinsey | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

In March 2020, some of our McKinsey colleagues argued that the COVID-19 crisis could be the “imperative of our time.” A month later, we noted that it could bring a “dramatic restructuring of the economic and social order.” We stand by those assertions. The COVID-19 pandemic has been an economic and human catastrophe, and it’s far from over. But with vaccines beginning to roll out, it’s possible to be cautiously optimistic that the next normal will emerge this year or next.
And we believe that, in some ways, that normal could be better. With good leadership, from both business and governments, the changes we described—in productivity, green growth, medical innovation, and resiliency—could provide an enduring foundation for the long term.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: an optimistic viewpoint of the future, very much worth reading as it covers all aspects of the recovery and many elements of digital transformation - remote work, eCommerce, etc.

AI talent remains limited event with 500K people globally with #AI skills via @jfgagne @elementai | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

We estimate that globally, there will be 86,000 authors pre-publishing fundamental and applied AI research papers on arXiv in all of 2020; and that there are approximately 478,000 people globally with the specialized AI technical skills needed for building an AI product. You can read the full report with further breakdowns of the data here. Below I share why understanding the talent pool can help explain the friction in getting AI to work.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: AI and more specifically machine learning and deep learning skills are in high demand but it appears from this annual update that demand remains higher than supply.

Best practices for all-remote organizations

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this well-researched article highlights the PROs & CONs of work from anywhere - WFA - and provides best practices from large companies that have done this at scale (1300 WFA employees at GitHub). A reference for us all in digital transformation and also a showcase for the real impact of our work: large cities may struggle to attract people versus small towns that have lower cost of living and little traffic, countries may find that work visas need to be adapted to limit remote workers (how to do that), etc.

All in all, it may be the biggest transformation that digital brings: a societal change. Who knows...

It seems to be what's wanted to be used to monitor who has COVID-19 and who doesn't.  This would be those who have tested positive, those who have not been tested, and those in recovery.  By contract monitoring, every move made can be calculated.  The results could mean that persons found infected could be made to relocate to a forced quarantine.  The information could present pattern motion as a whole.  Thus, helping calculate where higher infection rates populate and helping to further investigation as to the cause/causes and spread of COVID-19.

Another speculation, it could help provide a system that incorporates police to be able to enforce that known infected persons are regulated to ensure that home quarantine is followed.  It could also help monitor, recovered cases in the possibility of relapse.  Relapse in regards to future contact with active positive cases, and the physical preparedness to relapse or not relapse.

Learn from experience of companies that have decided to ditch their office and have all workers remote: Everything We Know About Remote Work via @Buffer | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Remote work has been the norm at Buffer for many years now; we ditched our office in 2015 and have been hiring remote teammates since 2011. Here's our take on remote work.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: have everyone work from home. Many say it cannot be done. Buffer has done it. They may be small (few 100s employees) and not have a long history (10 years) and produce a digital solution (website), their experience may help every business improve their remote work environments.

State of #Cybersecurity 2020 shows that it is mostly a human resources problem - which is not going to be resolved soon and may bee exacerbated with enhanced remote work via @ISACA @CybersecurityHub | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The cybersecurity skills gap has been plaguing enterprises for years—but despite garnering much discussion and media coverage, little progress is being made.

State of Cybersecurity 2020 looks at questions such as:

  • How long does it take to fill a cybersecurity role with a qualified candidate?
  • What percentage of cybersecurity candidates are qualified for the role?
  • Is retention improving or worsening?
  • Which cybersecurity skills are in the highest demand?
  • Are HR teams informed partners in the search for qualified cybersecurity candidates?
  • Are cybersecurity teams becoming more gender-balanced, and are diversity programs doing enough to help?
  • What can companies do to staff up more quickly and find better-qualified candidates?
Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this in depth study shows that cybersecurity issues in organizations stem from lack of skilled resources. With covid and remote work on the rise, the importance of cybersecurity is higher than it has ever been.

A look at #digitalTransformation from the human angle highlights changes in demand and supply of talent - Twelve Forces That Will Radically Change How Organizations Work: The New New Way of Working... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Together, these forces will revolutionize the way that work gets done in companies and will compel leaders to rethink even the most basic assumptions about how their organizations function. They will need to discover new ways of organizing, performing, and leading, along with new approaches to recruiting, developing, and engaging employees. All this in organizations with limitless data, open boundaries, employees and machines working side by side, and rapidly evolving employee value propositions.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the biggest impact of digital transformation is on humans and this article from BCG analyzes the changes in talent demand and supply. Must read for managers in the context of global changes we currently see.

Courtney Green's curator insight, May 2, 2020 6:45 PM
The meat company Tyson recently had to shut down some of their facilities due to employees becoming sick with Covid-19. This move sent major concern throughout the federal government about the economy and consumers on how they will be able to receive meat. This got me thinking that eventually companies may start finding ways to reduce actual human workers and rely majorly on artificial intelligence as a way to continue work. So far we have seen workers go on strike, become sick or forced to stay home with their children. It would be naive to assume that companies/organizations won't be transformed and changed forever after this. According to the article, they predict several forces that will revolutionize work and one of them is automation. They believe that by 2050 nearly half of all U.S jobs will be completed through automation. Even before the pandemic we have seen automation dismantled industries, but that could be accelerated by companies desire to ensure their work process is not disrupted in the future. This could prove to have a tremendous affect on employment in the future as robots replace humans more and more.

The mind behind Linux | Linus Torvalds - this video is great because it explains why 1) #geeks are strange and 2) what you need to be a *good* programmer

Linus Torvalds transformed technology twice — first with the Linux kernel, which helps power the Internet, and again with Git, the source code management system used by developers worldwide. In a rare interview with TED Curator Chris Anderson, Torvalds discusses with remarkable openness the personality traits that prompted his unique philosophy of work, engineering and life. "I am not a visionary, I'm an engineer," Torvalds says. "I'm perfectly happy with all the people who are walking around and just staring at the clouds ... but I'm looking at the ground, and I want to fix the pothole that's right in front of me before I fall in."

The jobs of the future are growing faster than all jobs, but this does not mean transition will be painless via @Axios @Cognizant | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Maybe you didn't grow up dreaming of being an "augmented reality journey builder" or "master of edge computing" or a "cyber calamity forecaster." But someone will. Jobs of the future will be heavy on the use of algorithms, automation and AI; customer experience; environment; fitness and wellness; health care; legal and financial services; transport; and work culture.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: it looks like the new technologies that replace jobs at a rapid pace are also creating new ones at a faster pace. This may prevent dooms day scenarios where self-driving trucks make truck drivers useless for example. However, looking at the new jobs created the skills they require is very different from the one they replace (not sure truck drivers can master edge computing easily - or enjoy it). More disturbing some of the high growth jobs are low paying ones, such as elderly care workers. Change thus will be hurtful for many of the displaced.
