Doubling Renewable Energy will Save Money and Avoid Climate Catastrophe | IRENA | Press Releases | Futures Thinking and Sustainable Development | Scoop.it

36% renewable energy in the global energy mix is possible, affordable and helps mitigate climate change

The world faces an important energy choice, according to a new reportlaunched by the International Renewable Energy Agency in New York today. “REmap 2030” says that scaling-up renewable energy to 36% of the world’s total final energy consumption by 2030 is possible, affordable and will keep the world on a trajectory consistent with a CO2 level of 450 ppm, the widely accepted threshold to limit global temperature increase to two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2100.

The report demonstrates that the investment cost for this global expansion of renewable energy is offset by savings of up to $740 billion per year on costs associated with pollution from fossil fuels.

Global warming is a serious problem, and we're working to decrease carbon emissions in Canada.

On the national level, we are developing a clean, renewable energy plan for Canada through the Trottier Energy Futures Project. On the provincial level, we're encouraging friendly competition to see which province can adopt the best climate policies through our Race to the Top campaign. For individuals, we offer resources on how to go carbon neutral at home and at work.

Together, we can turn back climate change.

DeforestACTION - Welcome to the movement.

DeforestACTION - Welcome to the movement. | Futures Thinking and Sustainable Development | Scoop.it
History of DeforestACTION

In March 2010, 12 schools and 90 students from the Asia Pacific region were invited to Singapore for Microsoft’s Regional Innovative Education Forum. This was the birthplace of DeforestACTION, originally titled “The High Noon Project” after JF Rischards’ book “High Noon, 20 Global Problems, 20 Years to Solve Them”.

Students and teachers decided they wanted to tackle one global issue – as a pilot – and they chose deforestation. They agreed on the name DeforestACTION, and launched a global collaborative project with, for and by students around the world. Over the course of 8 weeks, TakingITGlobal moderated online learning activities and project planning webinars, where students and teachers took a collaborative approach to global problem solving. They formed student action groups and designed plans to address deforestation in their local communities. Using an online voting system, the students selected a number of key approaches:

• Finding ways to preserve at risk forest and creating livelihoods for local landowners

• Creating a global awareness campaign for the destruction caused by palm oil production

• Collaborating with local people and helping animals who are victims of deforestation

The students decided to focus awareness and fundraising efforts towards a project in Borneo, Indonesia.

Fox News Cites Birther To Claim NASA "Faked" Global Warming

Fox News Cites Birther To Claim NASA "Faked" Global Warming | Futures Thinking and Sustainable Development | Scoop.it

In fact, the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) and NASA, which both maintain temperature records that use slightly different methods but show close agreement, have publicly documented the peer-reviewed adjustments they make to raw data. NCDC states that the "most important bias in the U.S. temperature record occurred with the systematic change in observing times from the afternoon, when it is warm, to morning, when it is cooler," and so it must correct this cool bias as well as other biases that, for example, result from moving temperature stations.

NASA's data shows that the nation has not been "cooling" since the 1930s, with several years, including 2012, ranking hotter than 1934 in the continental United States, along with a long-term warming trend. And while The Sean Hannity Show claimed that this shows the "Earth has been cooling," the continental United States makes up less than 2 percent of the Earth's surface -- global surface temperatures have increased significantly.

Kim Flintoff's insight:

The claims of some climate change skeptics border on lunacy... Fox seems to have a track record of denial and misrepresentation on Climate Science (and just about anything else from what I can see)

Across Canada – on campuses, in schools and in our communities we combine our forces to educate, empower and mobilize youth to take action.

Recently, we left charitable status behind and have re-ignited as OurClimate.ca to bring youth together for climate justice. Together we are striving to build a fair and sustainable world. This is our future, it’s too important to leave up to anyone else.

Obesity and climate change mitigation in Australia: overview and analysis of policies with co-benefits [Aust N Z J Public Health. 2014]

Obesity and climate change mitigation in Australia: overview and analysis of policies with co-benefits [Aust N Z J Public Health. 2014] | Futures Thinking and Sustainable Development | Scoop.it
AbstractOBJECTIVE:

To provide an overview of the shared structural causes of obesity and climate change, and analyse policies that could be implemented in Australia to both equitably reduce obesity rates and contribute to mitigating climate change.

RESULTS:

Policies with potential co-benefits fit within three broad categories: those to replace car use with low-emissions, active modes of transport; those to improve diets and reduce emissions from the food system; and macro-level economic policies to reduce the over-consumption of food and fossil fuel energy.

CONCLUSION:

Given the complex causes of both problems, it is argued that a full spectrum of complementary strategies across different sectors should be utilised.
