Futures Thinking and Sustainable Development

Established in 2008, the Australian Sustainable Development Institute (ASDI) enables a multi-disciplinary approach to sustainable development both for Australia and for the rest of the world. Many Curtin-based research groups work under the ASDI umbrella. While each brings individual expertise, their collaborative potential presents opportunities for developing the most innovative solutions to the complex challenges of sustainable development.

ASDI facilitates the collaboration of different groups across Curtin, as necessary, to engage in sharing knowledge and producing outcomes that benefit society. ASDI plays a leadership and a coordinating role in working both with on-campus research groups and with external clients at the state and national levels. In addition, many ASDI groups have international linkages, ensuring both the transfer of knowledge from the University to other areas around the world, and access to best international practice by our research, teaching and planning staff.

Curtin University was the Australian organiser for participation in the 2014 UNEP-DHI Eco Challenge 2.0.

The Eco Challenge uses an online strategic game, Aqua Republica, to help raise awareness of the importance and challenges of managing limited natural resources in the face of multiple and often competing demands in the drive towards a sustainable development.

AASHE is helping to create a brighter future of opportunity for all by advancing sustainability in higher education. By creating a diverse community engaged in sharing ideas and promising practices, AASHE provides administrators, faculty, staff and students, as well as the business that serve them, with: thought leadership and essential knowledge resources; outstanding opportunities for professional development; and a unique framework for demonstrating the value and competitive edge created by sustainability initiatives.

AASHE defines sustainability in an inclusive way, encompassing human and ecological health, social justice, secure livelihoods, and a better world for all generations.
