Reviving High-Touch Business Models for the Social Distancing Era using technology @MITSLOAN

Reviving High-Touch Business Models for the Social Distancing Era using technology @MITSLOAN | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Organizations should first consider how the behind-the-scenes logistics of their “Full Service 2.0” offering will be best facilitated by advances in technology. Ride-sharing services could provide a chauffeur-like experience by modifying their algorithms to allow a user to request trips with the same driver instead of the first available car. Hotels may accelerate the introduction of robots to handle room deliveries or other in-room services in a socially distant manner. Technology gives organizations new options to address the previously high costs of high-touch, full-service models or the uncertainties around service and delivery times that turned away consumers from these services.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the covid pandemic will see a surge in "low touch" solutions (think doors that open automatically or paypass wireless payment). Here, MIT Sloan highlights that "high touch" businesses (think taxis and hotels) will have to look at technology to reduce the impact of their model in a social distancing world.

The telltale signs of successful Digital M&A often relies on #technology due diligence according to @McKinsey - I agree and that's one of my raison d'être... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

In our experience, technical due diligence is the single biggest differentiator of deals done well—or poorly. What’s more, technical due-diligence failures can usually be avoided. Almost always, the disappointed acquirer insufficiently vets the technology and discovers too late that it fails to work as advertised. Or the technology does work, but only in constrained environments, and won’t scale. In other cases, crucial parts of the IP turn out not to be owned by the seller.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: organizations spend considerable time and effort for financial due diligence but relatively little on technology due diligence. Often this is due to lack of knowledge at the executive or even at the CIO level - especially when acquiring a new tech or in a new field. In the past, I've come to develop an approach where I perform a 360 degree technology audit that not only dives into the capabilities of the solution (the software code) but also on other essential elements of success (software engineering best practice and processes, design and requirements, etc.).

IT'S TIME TO BUILD: a plea to start building things again locally instead of outsourcing everything - this is an engineers dream and what the next 20 years are all about! via @a16z | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Every Western institution was unprepared for the coronavirus pandemic, despite many prior warnings. This monumental failure of institutional effectiveness will reverberate for the rest of the decade, but it's not too early to ask why, and what we need to do about it... Our nation and our civilization were built on production, on building. We built roads and trains, farms and factories, then the computer, the microchip, the smartphone, and uncounted thousands of other things that we now take for granted, that are all around us, that define our lives and provide for our well-being. There is only one way to create the future we want for our own children and grandchildren, and that's to build.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I spent the better part of my life moving physical processes in the digital world. Now the pendulum shifts and we must pour our engineering energy into building things locally - using digital processes, techniques, technologies, from 3D printing to robots to IOT. This is the next 20 years.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution by @WEFORUM provides strategic intelligence on technologies and other elements that fuel the #digitalTransformation | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The Fourth Industrial Revolution represents a fundamental change in the way we live, work, and relate to one another. It is a new chapter in human development, enabled by technology advances that are commensurate with those of the first, second and third industrial revolutions, and which are merging the physical, digital, and biological worlds in ways that create both promise and peril. The speed, breadth, and depth of this revolution is forcing us to rethink how countries should develop, how organizations create value, and even what it means to be human. Now, as the world grapples with COVID-19, there is an opportunity to further harness the power of the revolution in ways that create a more inclusive, human-centred global economy.

CDP Marketplace Trends Webinar from @RSG provides much needed update on this new very immature technology and states the obvious: if you have a use case then go ahead, otherwise wait #digitalTransf... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The MarTech marketplaces that RSG covers continue to evolve rapidly and have become more complex (with more overlaps!) this year. The Customer Data Platform (CDP) market is no different - with new vendors, more investment, emerging niches, and evolving use cases.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: always great insights by RSG, this one is same. The net net: CDP is a great but immature technology with too many use cases and no solution that delivers on all of them. If you have a use case that mandates a CDP, go ahead and pick the best of breed solution that suits your needs. Otherwise, wait. So true.

Listening to the webinar I could not help and wonder: who in an organization should be leading a CDP implementation? The use case scream marketing but the technology requires IT skills and expertise. When will the role of marketingTechnologist finally become a reality?...

Is your Digital Team having more successes than failures?

Lots of great nuggets in this one for producing a successful digital experience. I love the “build the right thing” and “build the thing right” mentality. How often does one or both get done successfully, probably a lot less than we realize.

Another favorite nugget is “data tells you the what but doesn’t tell they why” which is extremely important in today’s data driven world.  At the end of the day you have to be in front of and exposed to customers to actually know the why to figure out the how.

Forrester Total Economic Impact study of the @Salsify #PIM implementation shows 7 months payback & 339% ROI - but more important details certain costs and savings with such tools | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Forrester Consulting conducted a Total Economic Impact™ (TEI) study and examine the potential return on investment (ROI) enterprises may realize by deploying Salsify’s Product Experience Management (PXM) Platform.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the benefits of back-office systems such as product information management (PIM) or customer data platforms (CDP) are hard to grasp. That is why studies like this are so important - beyond the obvious hype around ROI and payback - they highlight costs and areas where you may be able to save. Moreover, solutions like Salsify that are SaaS cloud based very often struggle to gain traction as teams in IT or operations are already in place and not about to get fired. Large ERPs like SAP or Oracle will claim that their modules are better and more integrated. Unfortunately, front-office teams in Marketing and eCommerce face challenges and huge savings when it comes to improved data quality and faster time to market which often are hard to measured. This study may help identify some of these areas of saving...

Focusing on business processes can lead companies to end up with multiple systems that perform similar functions, such as customer-relationship management. Concentrating too much on technology can cause EA teams to organize their work around building applications rather than enabling the business.
Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this article relates to a recent post on EA tools. The conclusion is clear: EA should focus on delivering what business needs instead of pushing for technology infrastructure. Instead of having milestones related to building single sign on or identity management solutions, align roadmap to the delivery of employee self-service portal for HR or supplier B2B eCommerce for supply chain BU. Key #technology concepts behind @Faceboook #cryptocurrency are #openSource & documentation is available online- the State Machine Replication in the #Libra #Blockchain | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

This report presents LibraBFT, a robust and efficient state machine replication system designed for the Libra Blockchain. LibraBFT is based on HotStuff, a recent protocol that leverages several decades of scientific advances in Byzantine fault tolerance (BFT) and achieves the strong scalability and security properties required by internet settings. LibraBFT further refines the HotStuff protocol to introduce explicit liveness mechanisms and provides a concrete latency analysis. To drive the integration with the Libra Blockchain, this document provides specifications extracted from a fully-functional simulator. These specifications include state replication interfaces and a communication framework for data transfer and state synchronization among participants. Finally, this report provides a formal safety proof that induces criteria to detect misbehavior of BFT nodes, coupled with a simple reward and punishment mechanism.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: Facebook announcement of its cryptocurrency called LIBRA will generate many comments but I expect few will take time to look at the technology behind the solution. Here, the blockchain state machine is explained in a detailed whitepaper.

IMHO this is the most interesting piece as it lays out the required components to implement a blockchain solution. This will require knowledge and expertise that today few have. If LIBRA is a commercial success then expect others to leverage the same technology in their solutions. Thus, worth reading.

Key #technology concepts behind @Faceboook #cryptocurrency are #openSource & documentation is available online- Move: A Language With Programmable Resources for #Libra #Blockchain | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

We present Move, a safe and flexible programming language for the Libra Blockchain. Move is an executable bytecode language used to implement custom transactions and smart contracts. The key feature of Move is the ability to define custom resource types with semantics inspired by linear logic: a resource can never be copied or implicitly discarded, only moved between program storage locations. These safety guarantees are enforced statically by Move’s type system. Despite these special protections, resources are ordinary program values — they can be stored in data structures, passed as arguments to procedures, and so on. First-class resources are a very general concept that programmers can use not only to implement safe digital assets but also to write correct business logic for wrapping assets and enforcing access control policies. The safety and expressivity of Move have enabled us to implement significant parts of the Libra protocol in Move, including Libra coin, transaction processing, and validator management.

Why Is It So Hard to Predict the Future? This 20 year study shows that generalists are better to predict future than specialists - Can this be a useful approach to #DigitalTransformation? I think s... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

In Tetlock’s 20-year study, both the broad foxes and the narrow hedgehogs were quick to let a successful prediction reinforce their beliefs. But when an outcome took them by surprise, foxes were much more likely to adjust their ideas. Hedgehogs barely budged. Some made authoritative predictions that turned out to be wildly wrong—then updated their theories in the wrong direction. They became even more convinced of the original beliefs that had led them astray. The best forecasters, by contrast, view their own ideas as hypotheses in need of testing. If they make a bet and lose, they embrace the logic of a loss just as they would the reinforcement of a win. This is called, in a word, learning.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is a great article about a very serious study. I believe that digital transformationalists like me are a bit like foxes in this article: we consider people + process + technology in our transformation plans and often have to adjust over time as we learn more about the situation (very much in line with the Agile methodology). We consider not only technology but also how people will be affected and assign money and effort to support them. Often our solutions are less than perfect but adequate for the current needs and maturity of our client.
