#Food #Delivery #Startups Overextended As They Try To Grow Their Geographic Footprint | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
After Good Eggs scaled back to just one city, how many other food-delivery startups might be overextended as they try to "land and expand"?
Farid Mheir's insight:

Same day delivery and especially food delivery have become very popular in past year. This post provides data on their growth and geo footprint.

In a similar note, Amazon is starting 1-hour booze delivery offer in Seattle: http://recode.net/2015/08/25/amazon-will-bring-you-booze-in-one-hour-starting-in-seattle/

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

It appears to me like a money loosing business but it startup growth and financing in this field shows that we may be in "land grab" mode.

For me, I am in a wait and see mode to evaluate if they ever are going to make money.

How Walmart.com differentiates from Amazon: a comparison of 2 #ecommerce giants | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Even for a $260 billion commerce giant like Walmart, Amazon is a foe best not approached head-on. Instead, Walmart has crafted an e-commerce strategy that’s decidedly un-Amazon: Walmart isn’t hung up on people buying things online.

Farid Mheir's insight:

Interesting stat: "every 100 milliseconds in delay costs Amazon them 1 percent in sales".

Double-digit sales increases are expected through at least 2019. That year, ecommerce sales in the country will near C$50 billion ($45.28 billion).
Farid Mheir's insight:

Useful data on eCommerce

Don’t Buy Into #eCommerce “Buy Buttons” Just Yet via @smulpuru

Don’t Buy Into #eCommerce “Buy Buttons” Just Yet via @smulpuru | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
In this age of hyperadoption, we’ll have a pretty early read on whether any of these buy buttons are successful for merchants. Given that more and more eCommerce traffic is organic (i.e. shoppers typing a company’s URL directly), I don’t think we’ll see a major shift in how shoppers buy anytime soon, at least not with the executions that have been announced to date. Merchants that are intrigued by these offerings are wise to test and learn but to have low expectations. In fact, I’d argue the biggest opportunity from social networks isn’t sales but the data around what keywords and images are trending. These are crucial demand signals that merchants don’t always get on their own.
Farid Mheir's insight:

A review of social media "buy" buttons in pinterest, facebook and others.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

Forrester believes the "buy buttons" in social media site will not work but will remain as they provide information about buyer intent and taste. Good to know when preparing an eCommerce strategy.

Farid Mheir's insight:

11 tips to improve conversion in eCommerce websites. Based on actual research and data.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

We build eCommerce sites to sell stuff and we are still learning what works and what does not, the equivalent of "aisle end caps" or placing products at eye level in a traditional store. This is useful for anyone building an eCommerce website.

Farid Mheir's insight:

Brilliant idea form shopify: build a new eCommerce business from scratch and show everyone what you did and how you did it.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

Everyone in large corporation must look at this to understand how easy it is to start an eCommerce business. If you don't others will because the investment is so limited. Also notice that the issue is not with technology anymore but rather it is with what every traditional business must deal with on a daily basis: building a brand name and promoting the product and service.

Home Depot sees eCommerce as essential marketing tool - even with single digit conversion rates via @NRF

Home Depot sees eCommerce as essential marketing tool - even with single digit conversion rates via @NRF | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
For the most part, our conversion rates are in the low single digits … but that doesn’t mean that the experience for the other 96 percent wasn’t hugely important in terms of driving that sale in the store. No question, dot-com has been a successful sales vehicle — it grew over 50 percent in 2013 and it’s been growing at roughly a 40 percent clip in 2014. Still, the value extends beyond the sales numbers because it enables a lot of other activity that ultimately takes place in the stores.
Farid Mheir's insight:

Home Depot has been doing eCommerce for a while and realizes it has become essential to drive traffic to stores.

WHY THIS IS IMPORTANT

Companies that stay away from eCommerce because sales are not yet meaningful in their industry (grocery, furniture, etc.) may be missing out on bringing more people to their stores and improving their experience, branding, etc.

In short: you've got to to do eCommerce, whatever industry you are in.

Domino's, which has had a history of smart tech innovation, has launched ordering through many different platforms, from smartphones to smartwatches to smart TVs. More than a third of its employees now work in tech and IT, the biggest department at the company's world HQ in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Farid Mheir's insight:

Not sure this is the right thing - I can't imagine having 1500 of these buttons around the house - but would make sense say in a business environment for seldom ordered products that you are not sure needs to order them.
