The Full Story of the Stunning RSA Hack Can Finally Be Told via @WIRED | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

In 2011, Chinese spies stole the crown jewels of cybersecurity—stripping protections from firms and government agencies worldwide. Here’s how it happened.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: always good to understand how hacking was done 10 years ago. And remember that today Internet usage is at least 10x what it was in 2011.

An essential reference for solutions that have become staples of #digitalTransformation : Directory of Products That Assess #Identification Documents & Verify #Identity via @mydiacc HT @fbedard | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The DIACC is pleased to publish the first iteration of the Directory of Products That Assess Identification Documents & Verify Identity. This Directory is designed to provide an overview of providers’ solutions which use government issued photo identification cards, combined with biometric facial scans, to establish Digital Identity.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: I missed that one when it was published last year. The document lists and compares tens of solutions and provides great overview of their characteristics. A great starting point.

The Long #Hack: How China Exploited a U.S. Tech Supplier is a story about the impact of global supply chains. It makes the case for local manufacturing and strong encryption in a world where everyb... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Each of these distinct attacks had two things in common: China and Super Micro Computer Inc., a computer hardware maker in San Jose, California. They shared one other trait; U.S. spymasters discovered the manipulations but kept them largely secret as they tried to counter each one and learn more about China’s capabilities.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: fascinating stories of espionnage using modified hardware by China. Everyone knows China, Russia, USA, and others do it. Just painful to see it in writing. A consequence of global supply chains (read the book "the world is flat" to understand why this is so) and a strong business case to bring back some of the manufacturing in our country even if it makes some devices more expensive. Considering that we are carry with us smart phones and that they are all made in China, this is going to be tough. This article is also a great case for strong data encryption for all data at rest and in flight.

It should be clear by now that there is no #privacy without proper (#cyber)#security measures - case in point: Sealed U.S. Court Records Exposed in SolarWinds Breach via @BrianKrebs KrebsOnSecurity... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The ongoing breach affecting thousands of organizations that relied on backdoored products by network software firm SolarWinds may have jeopardized the privacy of countless sealed court documents on file with the U.S. federal court system, according to a memo released Wednesday by the Administrative Office (AO) of the U.S. Courts.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: all projects I work on is very concerned about privacy, especially when it comes to email communications. But if the computer systems that store the info are not secured, what's the point? Why do we even bother to accept cookies left and right when the info gets collected and stored in systems that can be breached. This subject needs to be raised to the top of the priority list in organization and this means $$$ and delays....

An Absurdly Basic Bug Let Anyone Grab All of Parler's Data via @WIRED HT @NunoBarbeita @umlaut21

An Absurdly Basic Bug Let Anyone Grab All of Parler's Data via @WIRED HT @NunoBarbeita @umlaut21 | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Parler lacked the most basic security measures that would have prevented the automated scraping of the site's data. It even ordered its posts by number in the site's URLs, so that anyone could have easily, programmatically downloaded the site's millions of posts. Parler's cardinal security sin is known as an insecure direct object reference,

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: security has become central in our age of digital transformation. Yet, it seems, most people are either unaware of basic security principles, or not willing to invest time or money to do it. And I am not even talking of doing it *well*. Just implementing proper security measure. In this case it affect Parler, which in itself I don't much care about (they deserve it for such a stupid mistake). But their lack of security impacts their users privacy as well. And that includes potentially millions of people (in the photo, 68000 video have been geolocated - too bad for keeping your anonymity ;-)

Contact Tracing Apps must be installed on all phones #doItNOW as 60% adoption is needed to stop #pandemic - even if bluetooth has limits and GPS alternatives have privacy issues via @IEEESpectrum | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Some researchers point to a University of Oxford study that modeled the coronavirus’s spread through a simulated city of 1 million people; it found that 60 percent adoption is needed to stop the pandemic and keep countries out of lockdown (although the study suggested that lower rates of adoption could still prove helpful).

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: install the contact tracing app on your phone, because without at least 60% adoption it won't be very useful. Know that bluetooth technology will respect your privacy but has limited effectiveness. Alternatives that use more precise GPS data unfortunately also have privacy issues. No perfect solution but everyone needs to install the app we have now.

Safeguarding deletion correctness in social network graphs highlights the embryonic work that is underway to help erase some of our #digitalExhaust to enable digital systems to "forget" via @facebo... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

DELF is a new framework to help developers implement data deletion in modern applications. Traditional methods for implementing deletion require application developers to write repetitive, error-prone code. DELF’s main novelty lies in enabling developers to implement deletion in every product they build with minimal effort, which takes the form of annotations rather than code. DELF introduces multiple correctness validation techniques to help achieve semantic correctness and avoid mistakes that could potentially lead to retaining data that should have been deleted or accidentally deleting the wrong data.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this technical paper explains how Facebook engineering team has developed a framework to help facilitate the deletion of data in their social graph. This can be used in other contexts.

To me it highlights the primitive state we are in when it comes to permanently deleting the data we produce in our daily activities - so called "data exhaust". But what the framework fails to enable is metadata - for example the inferences that were made from the post such as the political preferences - are not reverted when deletion occurs. Thus the original data still leaves traces - the original event is forgotten but its impact is not. Much more needs to be created to ensure true "deletion" in order to enable that digital systems "forget".

Imagine Yourself Being A Hacker #BeginnersGuide #weekendReading via @HackerNoon | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Make no mistake, the knowledge of hacking is different from a hacker. A hacker is a person, not the skill. And the use of any knowledge is a personal choice and that choice isn’t universal. The same way some politicians are corrupt, some hackers are corrupt. The same way some politicians are good, some hackers are good also. You may be a Satoshi Nakamoto or an Albert Gonzalez, it is your choice. There is nothing wrong with the hacker knowledge. It is all about you. What You’ll Learn

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: a nice reference on hackers and hacking along with a how-to guide if you want to get started! Digital transformation often requires a hacker's mindset to get around problems and think outside the box so this should be mandatory reading for anyone in the field! ;-)

5 Predictions For Wearable Technology: From Fitness Trackers To “Humans 2.0”

5 Predictions For Wearable Technology: From Fitness Trackers To “Humans 2.0” | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Even if, like me, you’ve had a fitness tracker or smartwatch for years, you might still be surprised at how well the wearable technology or “wearables” trend has taken off. What started with Fitbit and the like has now mushroomed into an entire industry of wearables that are designed to help us lead

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: been a while since I wrote about wearables, wellness and transhumanism. This article is a bit too futuristic but does provide some useful solutions.

With health concerns on the rise and social distancing a "thing" now, I keep thinking that wearables will find their killer app moment. If I am concerned about who I come in contact with - either because I am concerned for my personal health or I am concerned about insurance premiums as a company - then wearables become a great solution. As Bernard Marr highlights, the privacy concerns are never too far away in those use cases.

As more workers return to the office, companies are considering ways to track their employees to help prevent the spread of coronavirus among their workforce.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: yes the new normal may include being tracked by governments and employers for contact tracing. At some point the data will need to be be stored somewhere and the question will become: where is it stored? is it secure? is privacy protected?

It seems to be what's wanted to be used to monitor who has COVID-19 and who doesn't.  This would be those who have tested positive, those who have not been tested, and those in recovery.  By contract monitoring, every move made can be calculated.  The results could mean that persons found infected could be made to relocate to a forced quarantine.  The information could present pattern motion as a whole.  Thus, helping calculate where higher infection rates populate and helping to further investigation as to the cause/causes and spread of COVID-19.

Another speculation, it could help provide a system that incorporates police to be able to enforce that known infected persons are regulated to ensure that home quarantine is followed.  It could also help monitor, recovered cases in the possibility of relapse.  Relapse in regards to future contact with active positive cases, and the physical preparedness to relapse or not relapse.

In June of 2018, in the midst of all the other letters demanding that the company stop police use of Rekognition, Raji and Buolamwini expanded the Gender Shades audit to encompass its performance. The results, published half a year later in a peer-reviewed paper, once again found huge technical inaccuracies. Rekognition was classifying the gender of dark-skinned women 31.4 percentage points less accurately than that of light-skinned men.

The second person’s phone will periodically download a list of everyone that has tested positive in their area. If a match occurs, they will be notified and prompted to contact health authorities.”

WHY IT MATTERS: covid contact tracing appears an important component of public health safety. Apple and Google are embedding the solution into their OS quite fast. This is great news to prevent covid spread in the future. It raises a ton of questions about privacy and contact tracing outside of the health crisis.

Phone location heat maps track social distancing, but they raise a serious issue.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: using phone location and big data analysis tools it is possible to track where spring break party-going students have gone after the beach closed. Amazing to see, great and powerful to predict pandemic propagation. Also another reason to fear privacy invasion...

"re-identification" is the new way our privacy is eroded - basically 99.98% can be identified using 15 demographics attributes taken from anonymous datasets #privacy | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

While rich medical, behavioral, and socio-demographic data are key to modern data-driven research, their collection and use raise legitimate privacy concerns. Anonymizing datasets through de-identification and sampling before sharing them has been the main tool used to address those concerns. We here propose a generative copula-based method that can accurately estimate the likelihood of a specific person to be correctly re-identified, even in a heavily incomplete dataset. On 210 populations, our method obtains AUC scores for predicting individual uniqueness ranging from 0.84 to 0.97, with low false-discovery rate. Using our model, we find that 99.98% of Americans would be correctly re-identified in any dataset using 15 demographic attributes. Our results suggest that even heavily sampled anonymized datasets are unlikely to satisfy the modern standards for anonymization set forth by GDPR and seriously challenge the technical and legal adequacy of the de-identification release-and-forget model. Anonymization has been the main means of addressing privacy concerns in sharing medical and socio-demographic data. Here, the authors estimate the likelihood that a specific person can be re-identified in heavily incomplete datasets, casting doubt on the adequacy of current anonymization practices.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: there is no privacy in Big data as this study finds. A bit technical, it basically says that you can identify people if you have a large enough dataset. Even anonymous datasets - so ad blockers and all the  other "privacy" settings are futile because we leave anonymous data in website logs, even when GDPR regulation is applied. Not sure there is a way to remain private in today's world...

Internet privacy: Jumbo & disconnect.me, 2 apps that protect you from your apps via @TheGuardian | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Jumbo, an app for iOS and Android, launched in 2019 with the promise that it would cut through some of that confusion. The offer was simple: download the app, check a few boxes and it would automatically lock down your privacy settings on platforms including Facebook, Google, Twitter and Amazon. Rather than having to hunt down every individual preferences screen and decipher which settings were innocuous and which were merely deliberately phrased to sound innocuous, the app would do it for you.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: privacy is very important but it seems that the cure remains difficult. I have not tried Jumbo yet - I will - just to see what I will loose by being more private...

Amazon Ring camera doorbell bragged about tracking Kids on Halloween and provides camera feeds to police departments with event detection that is quite large - raises both good and bad feelings abo... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

The home surveillance company owned by Amazon bragged on Instagram about taping millions of kids going door to door.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: every device being connected to the internet brings with it the possibility of remote monitoring. Here, doorbells equipped with cameras can detect who's at the door and determine who is trick or tricking at Halloween. But it can also detect burglaries, car crashes and other common neighbourhood events. Should we be concerned or feel more secured?

In the context of businesses, this can be extended to employee surveillance and possibly spying. Fun times ahead as the number of connected IOT devices is set to explode x10 in coming years.
