A #technology transformation approach that works from @McKinsey stresses the importance of a business-driven #CIO role #digitalTransformation

A #technology transformation approach that works from @McKinsey stresses the importance of a business-driven #CIO role #digitalTransformation | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Acting on this understanding, the CIO partnered with business leaders to design a new model for how business and technology would partner. That included, for example, creating a single “point of entry” for any technology requests and frequent meetings to jointly review and prioritize them. Each month, they reviewed the tech road map against the business strategy. One result was the creation of a fast track for product requests that didn’t require significant work, a simple solution to the previous monolithic development process that every request had to go through.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this framework can help redefine the IT organization and the role of the CIO, so that IT projects become business-driven tech projects, not just technology foundations and infrastructure waiting for business projects to use them.

You can read the full report with further breakdowns of the data here. Below I share why understanding the talent pool can help explain the friction in getting AI to work.

Stuff that #AI is good for is human augmentation: the case here transforms a web page into a video clip #AI #augmentedHumans | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

URL2Video, a research prototype pipeline to automatically convert a web page into a short video, given temporal and visual constraints provided by the content owner. URL2Video extracts assets (text, images, or videos) and their design styles (including fonts, colors, graphical layouts, and hierarchy) from HTML sources and organizes the visual assets into a sequence of shots, while maintaining a look-and-feel similar to the source page. Given a user-specified aspect ratio and duration, it then renders the repurposed materials into a video that is ideal for product and service advertising.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: creating videos from web page content illustrates the power of AI-augmented human capabilities. Expect this in all fields: humans create content and AI generates alternative options that are convincing enough to fool others into thinking "a human did it". Generative design, text summary, netflix thumbnail creation photoshop image improvements are all examples that can be leveraged today.

For the first time, The New York Times’ digital subscriptions generate more revenue than its print ones - this is a sign of the #digitalDivide between those that can afford news + facts + #PII prot... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

despite the challenges posed by the coronavirus pandemic and nearly five years of constant attacks on the news media by the president, the Times projects a 14 percent increase in total subscription revenue in the fourth quarter vs. 2019, as well as a 35 percent increase in digital-only subscription revenue. The Times is well on its way to meet its goal of 10 million subscribers by 2025 and well on its way to make its digital journalism its core revenue stream.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the great digital divide is widening between those that can afford to pay to

1) get the news and the facts

2) protect their digital personal information

and the others.

This is the battle of the next decade.

Amazon planning new service for its rural deliveries to keep costs down and finalize its vertical integration? #ecommerce #retail

Amazon planning new service for its rural deliveries to keep costs down and finalize its vertical integration? #ecommerce #retail | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Amazon generated $1.6 billion in profit and $3.9 billion in revenue for the postal service in fiscal year 2019, with the postal service delivering 1.54 billion Amazon packages — about 30 percent of Amazon’s total volume last year. With more people relying on deliveries during the coronavirus pandemic, that number is expected to grow throughout the end of the year and well into next year.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: Amazon delivery cost now account for 17.8% of sales, increasing. It ships billions of packages via postal service in US (and Canada and elsewhere) but reports like these seem to indicate it may want to build its own delivery infrastructure. And this would be bad for eCommerce as Amazon would control the whole supply chain and obviously keep the savings for itself.

Don't believe your eyes + Fact check EVERYTHING from now on: #deepFake images are being used to influence and create alternate reality - How a fake persona laid the groundwork for a Hunter Biden co... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

A deepfake was used to create the fake author of the dubious Hunter Biden report. Martin Aspen, allegedly a Swiss security analyst who authored a report about the business activities of Joe Biden's son in China, is a completely fictional persona, disinformation researchers have concluded, according to a report by NBC News. The researchers say the report was part of an elaborate attempt to smear Biden. Among many other indications that Aspen is a fiction, the experts concluded that photos of Aspen that appear on various social media pages were created using deepfake technology, the A.I.-based method that can create fictional faces or graph one person's head onto another's body.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: AI has been used in the past 3-4 years to generate fake images of people, create fake politicians and celebrity videos, and even generate people that never existed. It was only a question of time for the technology to be used to influence people, here in the context of US political campaign. Don't believe what you read, see and hear. Fact check EVERYTHING.

Grocery ecommerce will drive the future of #robotic #fulfillment because it has the order volume and low margins to mandate #automation in its business case - and @Ocado UK grocery retailer appears... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Paul Clarke, Ocado's chief technology officer, has said he envisions the company eventually moving to completely "dark" fulfillment centers—ones that would be fully automated and employ virtually no people.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: the acquisition of robotics for Ocado fulfillment centers could be seen as one more tech announcement. But buried in this Fortune article is this quote from Ocado CTO that summarizes the ultimate goal of grocery eCommerce: dark warehouses with robots doing all the work.

This may sound very futuristic but in fact it is the consequence of the grocery eCommerce business model: the only way to make money is to have robots to the work that consumers do when pushing carts in the store.

'This is revolutionary’: new online bookshop unites indies to rival Amazon - we need this in all verticals for #localCommerce to survive #Books @TheGuardian | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Initially starting with 250 bookshops, more than 900 stores have now signed up in the US. “We went from selling $50,000 (£38,000) worth of books in all of February, to selling $50,000 a day in March, then $150,000 a day in April,” said Hunter. By June, Bookshop sold $1m worth of books in a day. The platform has now raised more than $7.5m (£5.7m) for independent bookshops across the US.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is a great example of the way small local businesses can survive - by creating marketplaces to sell and promote their wares. This is a vertical marketplace (focus on books). You also need horizontal marketplaces (focus on all stores on a street or region). And you need amazing search engines to let you discover merchants and their products.

AI camera mistakes referee’s bald head for football — hilarity ensued! This is a reminder that today's #AI is not yet intelligent but rather a very good specialized image analysis that was not poss... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, smaller football teams are relying on AI-powered cameras to cast live matches through YouTube. The camera was supposed to track the ball automatically using AI and show footage on YouTube. However, the camera’s AI thought a bald linesman’s head was the ball, and repeatedly kept showing him instead of the ball in play. Fans were not happy about this, and they had to even miss the team’s lone goal because of the glitch.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: this is to be expected as AI is not yet intelligent, just smart enough to analyze images statistically. To become intelligent, cameras need to "know" the ball should not be attached to someone's head, should travel between players on the field and not always on the sidelines. This is possible with simple heuristics or even specialized machine learning that - combined - should deliver a better result.

I spent the better part of a summer while in grad school hard coding a light tracking solution. This was back in the 80s, wayyyyy before ML was possible. Of course my solution was not good, and the current ML solutions are much better than "classical" software programs at image analysis. So ML is great but in order to become as good as humans, they need to include knowledge about more than clever image analysis.

Artificial intelligence and its limits - An understanding of AI’s limitations is starting to sink in via @TheEconomist | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

ai’s heralds say further transformations are still to come, for better and for worse. In 2016 Geoffrey Hinton, a computer scientist who has made fundamental contributions to modern ai, remarked that “it’s quite obvious that we should stop training radiologists,” on the grounds that computers will soon be able to do everything they do, only cheaper and faster. Developers of self-driving cars, meanwhile, predict that robotaxis will revolutionise transport. Eric Schmidt, a former chairman of Google (and a former board member of The Economist’s parent company) hopes that ai could accelerate research, helping human scientists keep up with a deluge of papers and data.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: a very good article on the current state of AI, as we move on the hype cycle from the "peak of inflated expectations" to the "through of disillusionment". No matter what, machine learning has already made possible what was impossible before: image analysis (but not yet understanding, as AI would require). Still, huge progress has been made and more to come.

Delivery is #eCommerce Achille's heal: slow, expensive, not good for the environment. Yet it is the way to go. #CanadaPost and others must transform from letters to parcel delivery - I say "bring b... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Everybody likes to get a package. In 2020, we'll send more than 100 billion of them--and that number could double by 2030. Who will deliver all those packages, and how? In this edition, The Next Normal explores what's ahead in last-mile parcel delivery.

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: parcel delivery has become the primary volume for postman. Why not have delivery routes - postman or milkmen - to deliver the parcels and not just the mail? Would this not be a more cost effective solution than delivering one by one?

Shopify as a Marketplace? or Lightspeed? or WooCommerce?

Shopify as a Marketplace? or Lightspeed? or WooCommerce? | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

One of the questions I see and hear quite often, is, "can Shopify be a marketplace? Like Etsy or Amazon? I want my sellers to have their own controls". So what exactly is the problem here? Shopify is great for eCommerce. Why can't we just hit an Easy button and make it be a marketplace, too, voila??

Farid Mheirs insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: shopify as a marketplace is question I've been asking for months (or any other eCom solution). After all, once you build your own eCommerce website on Shopify, all the components are in place to create a marketplace: products, categories, inventory, etc. After all, a marketplace is nothing more than a superset, a combination of all those individual shops?

Well, not really. A marketplace is more than a collection of products. It is a destination that provides a single user account, consolidated shipping and delivery, a single destination to resolve customer issues. It is a service, not a technology.

Thus, even though Shopify has the *technology* to build a marketplace, it does not (yet?) have the infrastructure to provide the *service* that a marketplace requires.
