The IDC MarketScape provides a clear framework to compare ecommerce vendors on their product offerings and strategies. The 2020 report evaluated 19 digital commerce platforms on their B2C capabilities.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: quadrants, marketscopes, waves and other market landscape analysis often provide information more important than a rating of solutions. Buried in most are very useful market analysis and visions that can help you understand the solutions out there and define your own priority matrix. Here I highlight IDC eCommerce framework, which you can find in the 2020 solution landscape report.
This frequently-updated page contains real-life examples and diagrams from Upsolver customers who are using AWS data lakes. While the Upsolver platform itself is a key component in all of these architectures, we hope even non-customers can learn from these examples when it comes to the use cases, considerations, and design patterns that go into a typical cloud data lake.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: you don't see this often these days. A useful compilation of data lake reference architectures - of coursed biased by software vendor upsolver and AWS, but still very useful - with links to the original engineering blogs. Bravo!
APM continues to be critical for modern, multicloud observability. Read the report where Gartner defines the market as "software that enables the observation of application behaviour and its infrastructure dependencies, users, and business key performance indicators (KPIs) throughout the application’s life cycle," and see why we’re positioned highest and furthest in both Completeness of Vision & Ability to Execute.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: as with all gartner quadrants, skip to the end for the content and market analysis sections for the useful insights in the field of APM. As we move to digital, monitoring and debugging when issues arise becomes more important than ever.
The post-pandemic workplace continues to shift and requires collaboration between remote workers and office workers. Digital transformation has accelerated across every organization and CIOs must maneuver to keep pace. Customer expectations have shifted, and spending habits are moving away from in-person activities to online. IT must improve its maturity in key capabilities to maintain relevance in the organization.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: I agree that hybrid collaboration, ransomware & automation are 2022 priorities for CIOs but feel that energy & blockchain may not be very high the priority list of most CIOs outside of government.

Marketing attribution frequently arises as a hot topic among RSG’s MarTech Leadership Council members. So in our last private meeting, we decided to address it head on, including a couple of case studies, one B2C and the other B2B.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: Jarrod of RSG provides very useful insights about the state of marketing attribution in this short post. The best quote is "attribution is something you do not something you buy". It perfectly summarizes the issues we face daily in trying to automate the attribution using software that is often expensive and incomplete.

Data cleaning is a massive part of data pre-processing and model building for machine learning algorithms so it's something you can never miss.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: data is essential for AI but also all kinds of business intelligence and analytics in the "traditional" world of eCommerce for example. The post brings up some of the elements to consider when planning to cleanse data. Not a trivial task to perform automatically.

Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: this list of technology questions for 2022 feels like an answer to the question "what is digital disruption?".
We have reached a moment in time where old technologies - eCommerce or videoconferencing for example - are finally breaking into established industries. And the impact, at scale, cannot be found in technology but rather in every single industry it disrupts.

Josh Evans talks about the chaotic and vibrant world of microservices at Netflix. He starts with the basics- the anatomy of a microservice, the challenges around distributed systems, and the benefits. Then he builds on that foundation exploring the cultural, architectural, and operational methods that lead to microservice mastery.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: an outstanding presentation on what it takes to create a microservice architecture at scale - here for Netflix. More interesting than the technical details - which are plentiful - are the explanations of the work required to change an architecture "in flight", while the solution is running and expanding globally. Plus with a n outstanding speaker. Must listen.

Discover 6 ways tech will change the grocery store experience, from text-based customer service to micro-fulfillment to virtual kitchens.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: grocery technology evolution is difficult so I take this journey as a guide for technologies that will enhance or improve the shopping experience, not replace it altogether - at least not in short term.
2021 was the year of broken supply chains, Amazon aggregators, more advertising, Shopify's almost-marketplace, and one unanswered question - did the pandemic boost e-commerce after all? For now, the world of marketplaces revolves around Amazon - it has doubled in size in two years. No one will challenge it directly, but a different paradigm might.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: a must read article that summarizes very well the state of ecommerce marketplaces.
Successful companies are meeting this challenge by taking a “customer-back” perspective. Based on a clear understanding of the skills, behaviors, and mindsets the organization requires, these companies identify capability gaps and improvement opportunities across their workforce. Then, instead of offering “one size fits all” training, they design their capability programs based on detailed analysis of the needs of individual learners—while instilling a culture that fosters learning throughout the organization. That involves the application of a few powerful principles.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: yes, we need more T-shaped employees - at least as far as training and skills are concerned. A very good paper from mckinsey on the breadth vs depth of knowledge and the need to provide individualized training programs for your employees.
In Santiment’s end-of-year digest, we look back at some of 2021’s most important market trends and what they tell us about the year ahead - all from the prism of on-chain, social and development activity.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: this end of year review of the cryptocurrency world is a great summary for those, like me, that do not follow the madness on a day-to-day basis. It help explain many of the new cryptos - not just bitcoin - and provides a huge number of interesting charts.
“Self-hosting” is a practice that pretty much describes itself: running your own internet services, typically on hardware you own and have at home. This contrasts with relying on products from large tech companies, which the user has no direct involvement in. A self-hoster controls it all, from the hardware used to the configuration of the software.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: everything is now offered "as a service" in a cloud-based solution. But for some it is adequate to self host given the availability of cheap computing devices, high speed home internet and an explosion of very good open source solutions.

Visual editors for HTML, CSS, and SVG: Customize, curate, and publish designs faster than ever.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: this appears to be a trend in web design, the use of programmatic (sometimes AI more often just plan code) to create page design components. With the growth of nocode solutions like webflow, this is an important way to make web design more affordable, easy and fast.
The automation, and control of the resulting data, raises questions about the role of human farmers.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: indeed a better place to start with autonomous electric vehicles appears to be a tractor in a field. And looking at John Deere over the past few years AI and big data are the way to go.
Business intelligence white papers on BI industry trends, and the latest BI and analytics analyst reports from Gartner, Dresner, BARC and Forrester.
Farid Mheir's insight:
WHY IT MATTERS: I am not big on surveys other than for the guidance they provide about how people actually use their systems. Here, the survey sheds light on many of the features and use cases in BI.
