6 #devSecOps #bestpractice to implement security as code - not certain that many of my colleagues are doing this just yet, yet this feels like the right thing to do | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it
We created a DevSecOps assessment to help your company level up its DevSecOps capabilities.
  1. Automate security scans and tests (such as static analysis, dynamic analysis, and penetration testing) within your pipeline so that they can be reused across all projects and environments.
  2. Build a continuous feedback loop by presenting results to developers, allowing them to remediate issues while coding and learn best practices during the coding process.
  3. Evaluate and monitor automated security policies by building checks into the process. Verify that sensitive data and secrets are not inadvertently shared or published.
  4. Automate complex or time-consuming manual tests via custom scripts, with human sign-off on results if necessary. Validate the accuracy and efficiency of test scripts so that they can be replicated across different projects.
  5. Test new code within a staging environment to allow for thorough security and low-impact failure, and test on every code commit.
  6. Scheduled or continuous monitoring should automatically create logs (or red flags) within a review dashboard (such as GitLab’s Security Dashboard feature).
Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: short article on 6 best practice to ensure security is built into the continuous development process. Makes sense but I don't see too many doing this just yet (heck few are automating functional tests today, much less security ;-)

Amazon Prime reaches 200 million members worldwide - so the value of PRIME must be almost almost 500B$ | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Amazon has 147 million Prime members in the United States, according to estimates from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: Prime has 200M members worldwide, 143M in USA. Interesting to see what people use it for - but the survey hides an important fact: the real value of PRIME for Amazon.

I wrote about the value of PRIME in the past but this increase warrants a review of previous numbers. Back in 2016 when "only" 48M members, this report valued PRIME at 143B$.

Wondering what #GhostKitchens are? it is the future of fast food and food delivery as evidenced by this Canadian brand that partners Walmart Canada amid pandemic | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Toronto-based Ghost Kitchen began more than five years ago. The concept it designed includes a footprint of about 2,500 to 3,000 square feet where it runs anywhere between 20 and 30 international brands out of one kitchen. Sales are either through walk-in with its own technology and QR codes, with no customer interaction in front of the house, or through third-party delivery. Customers can buy from any of the food brands at the same time.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: ghost kitchens are natural evolution of eCommerce when applied to food delivery. This article explains the concept and how they are deploying into Walmart across Canada.

Hardware failure is a critical component of #digitalTransformation. Case in point: McDonalds outdoor Drive Thru menu board failures shows how difficult it can be to replace good old paper cardboard... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

McDonald’s Drive-Thrus are a baseline for the entire industry and seeing them install LCDs that basically blow up and fail totally is something everyone wants to understand.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: found this example of displays that fail at McDonalds drive-thrus. It highlights the fact that digital transformation often means deploying new hardware in places where there not in the past. And that creates a huge number of issues in terms of design, maintenance, operations, etc. Very often not a big deal is planned but very much a big deal if not accounted for in the beginning. So think about cooling, electricity availability, repairs, software version updates, security, content upload, etc.

Google has made it easy to find school report material online and now it provides teachers with the cure - where else should this be used? #consultant reports? #cheating #plagerism | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

In addition to checking student work for matches across billions of web pages and books, originality reports can now check for matches against a repository of student work within your domain.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: Google search made it easy for a generation of students to "borrow" content from others in order to get "inspiration" for their reports. Now Google also provides teachers with tools to automatically check what is unique and what is not in automated fashion. Why is this not included in WORD or Google DOCS to automatically verify what is truly unique in documents you receive, say from consultants like me? Oh no, many would find this not a good idea I'm sure... ;-)

DoorDash and Instacart look to dive into the credit card space, riding on the rise of #eCommerce

DoorDash and Instacart look to dive into the credit card space, riding on the rise of #eCommerce | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Instacart: The firm will be working with JPMorgan Chase to issue a credit card that will reportedly let customers earn 5% cash back on Instacart purchases. The card is said to launch next year.
DoorDash: The company is rumored to have several bidders lined up for its rewards credit card, including JPMorgan Chase, but is reviewing its options before making a decision in the next few weeks. DoorDash is also in the process of recruiting restaurant partners and stores to offer cardholders rewards and discounts on a rotating or permanent basis.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: interesting to see that pick-pack-delivery providers are in the best position to monetize their direct customer relations, like banks & shopping malls before eCommerce.

7 companies driving the US click-and-collect boom - 50% of #ecommerce of orders are #BOPIS means that #delivery is too expensive in most cases | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

It makes sense that home improvement retailers leaned the heaviest on click and collect, given the size and weight of many of their products, and the fact that buyers—including small businesses, contractors, and repair service providers—often need these products immediately.
The big-box retailers came in just behind the home improvement retailers, followed by department stores like Macy’s and Nordstrom, which saw the least dramatic transitions to click and collect.
The lower figures for department stores can partially be attributed to the complete closure of certain locations during the height of the pandemic, thus precluding click and collect and forcing customers into traditional ecommerce delivery. Additionally, demand for apparel was low last year when compared with other product categories. But the lower click-and-collect share figures for department stores probably comes down to consumers still preferring home delivery for lower-priority, less time-sensitive items like clothing and accessories.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: click-n-collect will remain a reality for some products because delivery fees are just TOO HIGH. We need a low cost delivery solution for eCommerce, or well designed pickup areas in all stores.

Google Shopping microsite highlights 1,000 of the most popular products based on users interests - and marks the start of a battle against Amazon for being the destination for #eCommerce search sta... | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

Google Shopping has gone through quite the metamorphosis over the years. Back in 2002, it was called Froogle upon launching - a pun on the term frugal - and was later renamed to Google Product Search in 2007. Then, it was renamed yet again to Google Shopping in 2012 and went through several iterations even within itself relating to how information was presented to users.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: with the explosion of marketplaces, eCommerce will become a battle for the product search starting point. Used to be that you went to Google first for everything. But in recent years, searching for products often meant you started your search on Amazon, not Google - as evidenced by the growth in Amazon traffic and ads. Big problem for Google.

Google shopping is their answer and this microsite that highlights the best products per categories is trying to do for product search what Google had done for website searches in 2000: aggregate the interest of millions to reference eCommerce websites everywhere - and mostly away from Amazon.

After years of not doing anything, we now see Google taking eCommerce seriously.

Five metrics for CEOs to measure digital success via @McKinsey can help craft quantifiable metrics for #CTO, #CDO, VP #digitalTransformation or VP #innovation success factors

Five metrics for CEOs to measure digital success via @McKinsey can help craft quantifiable metrics for #CTO, #CDO, VP #digitalTransformation or VP #innovation success factors | WHY IT MATTERS: Digital Transformation | Scoop.it

As organizations launch more and more digital initiatives, CEOs must monitor whether they are delivering business results. These metrics are ones to watch.

Farid Mheir's insight:

WHY IT MATTERS: "digital transformation" often means anything and everything. These 5 markers can help you define quantifiable metrics to ground resources in concrete, actionable activities. Too often, unfortunately, are CDOs "chief digital officers" , CTO "chief technology officers" or "VP digital transformation" or "VP innovation" tasked with vague requirements that are aspirational ("move the organization in the digital world") or qualitative ("coordinate actions and support executives in the digital transformation"). After a few years of workshops, evaluations, and pilot projects they often fail to deliver meaningful business impacting metrics.

WHY IT MATTERS: interesting solution developed at Cloudflare, a technology company, to facilitate conversations across the organization. The paper highlights the challenges of making random chats truly random (and useful). As work from home and remote work become the norm post-covid, this will become required in all organizations.
