As we see a shift towards greater digital relationships between customers and organisations, the risks associated with customer relationships are changing and no risk is more front-of-mind at the current time than data security. Sony recently lost the personal data of some 77million accounts from their PlayStation Network including names, email addresses, birth dates, log in details, passwords and possibly credit card details. The organisation behind the breach is yet to be confirmed but what is beyond doubt is that Sony have a long road ahead of them when it comes to rebuilding consumer trust (perhaps shown by the significant loss they reported this week.

I often hear one of the key reasons for the lack of ecommerce in Canada is due to the spread of the population all over what is the worlds second largest country. However this argument makes less sense when you look at the map below. It is true that there are relatively large gaps of low density and the size of the country of course factors into achieving an efficient national distribution network, but the reality is the majority of us live closely packed along the border.

Salman Khan's educational website of 2,400 video lessons could be the solution to middle-of-the-class mediocrity. ... Initially, Thordarson thought Khan Academy would merely be a helpful supplement to her normal instruction. But it quickly become far more than that. She’s now on her way to “flipping” the way her class works. This involves replacing some of her lectures with Khan’s videos, which students can watch at home. Then, in class, they focus on working problem sets. The idea is to invert the normal rhythms of school, so that lectures are viewed on the kids’ own time and homework is done at school. It sounds weird, Thordarson admits, but this flipping makes sense when you think about it. It’s when they’re doing homework that students are really grappling with a subject and are most likely to need someone to talk to. And now Thordarson can tell just when this grappling occurs: Khan Academy provides teachers with a dashboard application that lets her see the instant a student gets stuck.

Robert Half Technology offers four tips for using social media sites in the workplace: - Know the rules of the road. Make sure you’re clear about what type of social networking use is permitted within your organization.
- Exercise discretion. Never share sensitive or confidential company information or post negative comments about your employer, or current or potential clients and customers.
- Get the scoop. If permissible, use social media sites at work to connect with customers and clients, follow thought leaders in your field or gather industry news.
- Play it safe. If you use social media on behalf of your company, make sure you protect your feeds by creating secure passwords, refraining from clicking on questionable links and limiting access to select employees.

Enterprise Transformation is a popular term used to describe efforts on the part of senior executives to improve the overall performance of their businesses. Of all the terms that have been tossed around recently, it probably is the best description of how executives understand what it is they are doing. IBM suggests: - Start a movement - Transformation requires the active engagement of employees.
- Establish clear transformation governance - The initial energy of a new initiative fades, and the effort ultimately succeeds only if there is a clear structure in place to see that goals are accomplished.
- Transformation requires a data-driven discussion - It's important to gather volumes of data and then to analyze it to track what is working and where there are problems.
- Radically simplify business process - IBM focused on eliminating, standardizing and automating work, with a special focus on eliminating complexities that impede integration efforts.
- Invest in transformative innovation - New technologies, new platforms, new approaches can't solve every problem but they can accelerate your processes and enable your people.
- Embody creative leadership - IBM surveys suggested that the number one leadership quality needed for successive transformations was creativity—which IBM went on to associate with "broader and deeper thinking of systems and patterns, the ability to handle uncertainty with optimism and enthusiasm, more openness to a multitude of cultural differences, meaningful collaboration, and a spirit of restless reinvention." This may sound like fuzzy stuff, but IBM proceeded to pioneer classes in these leadership skills.

About a year ago, Glaxo set up a pilot program in which employees could work at adjustable-height desks, among a slew of other workplace design changes in preparation for the company's move to new offices.
The design of the 208,000-square-foot Navy Yard office is "180 degrees from where we are today," he said, describing the current setting as a "cubicle world" not optimal for morale, productivity, or health.
In the new office space, no one has a designated seat; desk drawers have been replaced with lockers; trash cans and printers are in centralized areas to encourage movement; phones are embedded in computers; and workers could be typing away while sitting on a yoga ball or on a chair. And there are treadmill desks, known as "walking stations."

Three years ago Metro launched a joint venture partnership with dunnhumby, a firm best known for helping retailers like Tesco and Kroger put customers at the center of every decision. That partnership has already yielded a 7.6 percent increase in Metro’s customer reach via the weekly flyer. Greater than 95 percent of shopper communications are now fully customized, and Metro attributes a year-over-year sales increase of $39 million to five million mailings consisting of 37 million personalized coupons. In addition, the Metro & Moi loyalty program now reaches more than one million households and has paid $50 million Canadian in cash rewards to participating customers.

After five years, Amazon’s local grocery-delivery service remains in limited test mode, but the Internet giant recently has made some moves that could set the stage for expansion.
“It is a very convenient service, but picking, packing and delivering grocery orders is expensive,” said former technology Vice President Nadia Shouraboura, who left Amazon last year to create Hointer, a robot-operated clothing store in Seattle’s University District. “Just like apparel, the grocery business is both large and ripe for innovation, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see Amazon be very persistent and patient,” she said. “Jeff always thinks long-term.”
